    Mactel Powerbook Expectations

Personally I'll be happy if a fast and compatible version of either VMware or VPC is announced along with the machine. I'll pick it up in a heartbeat! Need a new laptop anyway, but have to be able to develop Windows stuff on it :(

xBox 360 PPC vs PowerMac PPC

Well sure it can be done, but it is hardly common, you don't see them show up in the top 500 list, and the PS2 is a bitch to program if you want anything near the theoretical peak from it. It is a common marketing stunt. Next we shall see at least one of the console makers claim that they...

xBox 360 PPC vs PowerMac PPC

Well, back when the PS2 came out plenty of people bought into the hype about how fast it was, and talked about building a supercomputer from clusters of PS2's. I even seem to remember Sony and IBM fueling the hype with small stories about how we would probably see high-end workstations using the...

Powerbook given up? PLEASE HELP... I'm panicing!

Computers /are/ incredibly reliable—hardware-wise anyway. That only means that it feels extra unfair when you are the unlucky one :( I have had two headcrashes and many software errors eat at my data through the years, and have learned bitter lessons from it. My first headcrash destroyed all...

Powerbook given up? PLEASE HELP... I'm panicing!

Remember: As long as you have not overwritten any of your data, they can quite likely be recovered from even a very damaged drive by professional services - not cheap, but it WILL work. They routinely recover data from drives that have headcrashed, been in fires, had bullits fired through them...

Powerbook given up? PLEASE HELP... I'm panicing!

They will still help you with a lot of stuff even without Applecare. Perhaps you can borrow or buy a FireWire HD, install a system on it (from another Mac, perhaps), boot on it and use this as a platform for copying your stuff. Right now you NEED TO CALM DOWN and NOT DO STUFF YOU DON'T...

Powerbook given up? PLEASE HELP... I'm panicing!

Silly question, but you /have/ tried calling Apple support, right? They are actually quite helpful most of the time. If your disk is screwed up, your first priority is (obviously) to get your files off to something else. Havd you copied your home folder and various other stuff to CD, DVD or...

Is the Dell 2405fpw compatible with macs?

Wait for a sale. They often do deep discounts of this model, at least in Europe. I have two for my PM, and it ROCKS!

Backing up 10.3.9 before installing Tiger

OK, update: I found that the reason I couldn't do a restore to the LaCie disk from the internal HD in the PB was that the external drive was formatted FAT. Once I reformatted it HFS I could restore to it with no problem at all. The error message ("An error (2) occurred") could have been a lot...

Backing up 10.3.9 before installing Tiger

All well and good, except CCC does not work with an USB2 drive - at least not on this 12" PB :( Any other suggestions? Disk tool won't let me do an image of the boot disk because it is in use, so I guess that is out...

Backing up 10.3.9 before installing Tiger

Hi, I am about to embark on upgrading my GFs Powerbook. It currently runs 10.3.9. For my peace of mind I would like to: 1) Know how to do a full backup to an external harddisk (USB 2 Lacie is purchased for this purpose) 2) How to restore from the backup in case of disaster As it is...

    Nano lawsuit.

Hmm, two weeks in and I have to admit that I am now seeing the same "rubbed by steel wool" scratches on my nano. It has spent its life either on my desk, or (solo) in my kangaroo pocket on my jacket/sweater with the in-ears wrapped around it the better to avoid anything contacting the surface...

10.4.3 and iChat!! More tabbed chatting etc.

Is it just me, or does it look like they are finaly going to move to Java 1.5 as part of the update? About time too, if you ask me - it has been a huge hinderence for the Mac users at my U, where we use Java, and obviously want to use the newest version.

Did Apple just kill modern TV?

Well, to quote my American GF: ...and I agree with you both. Here we basically watch series (which we are already doing on the computer), news, kid's cartoons (which is basically series too), movies and (rarely) sports. Of these, only news and sports needs to be on-line and immediately...

    ipod phone

Hmmm... I expect that Apple + Moto will have a deal for getting iTunes software on the RAZR V3x 3G handset, which is due this quarter in Europe. Now if only they will get the damn phone software up to speed usability-wize I'm there!

    ipod phone

Well, sticking with phones, the most commonly used functions are: Voice calls SMS Contact management Calender entry/notification The rest is really just chrome, as very few people use it frequently. With that in mind, why is it that so many phones have horrible contact management, SMS...
