    Airport, D-Link, and cordless phones

From time to time my Intel iMac and my wife's iMac G5, both running OS X.4, lose the Airport connection. Typically, at boot-up, the Airport icon will be greyed out and a box will open asking for an administrator authorization to change setting. Do that and suddenly Airport is working. Note...

    OpenOffice default opening screen

When OpenOffice is opened it presents a blank word processor page. Is there any way to make it open to a spreadsheet?

Yes, I stepped through all the options I could find.

    Picture Viewer

I downloaded Graphic Converter and it's close to what I want but right off the bat I notice a couple of annoying characteristics: I prefer to set the size of the window and then have the viewer scale the photo to fill that window. I can't find a Preference setting in Graphic Converter that...

    Picture Viewer

I'm not talking about Windows Picture/Fax viewer, which I can't recall ever having used. I'm comparing Preview to the free IrfanView program (http://www.irfanview.com/) for Windows or the shareware PMView (http://www.pmview.com/) for OS/2 and Windows. For example, open Preview, click File/Open...

    Picture Viewer

As a new Mac user and after having used PMView (OS/2) and Irfanview (Windows), I find Preview too limited a picture viewer and iPhoto too cumbersome. Is there a picture viewer for Mac that's comparable to either PMView or Irfanview?

    OpenOffice Fonts and Printing

In response to another reply in this thread I went to the openoffice.org web site and discovered that there is a later version of OO. Not only that, the web site's FAQ says that after installing the new version I should be asked questions as you say. I was running 2.01 but now have downloaded...

    OpenOffice Fonts and Printing

The only version of OpenOffice for Intel iMac that I can find on the openoffice.org web site runs under X11. I am currently running OO 2.01, but am now downloading 2.04 in hopes that will help.

I found that help article but it's not helpful to me. For starters, I have no idea what Cocoa is. OpenOffice and X11 help are even less useful.

    Airport won't auto-connect after 10.4.8 upgrade

I have a similar problem using a D-Link router, with an Intel iMac and an iMac G5, both on 10.4.8. Could RFI have anything to do with it? We have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone with three handsets in the house, but the problem seems unrelated to whether the phones are or have been in use.

    OpenOffice Fonts and Printing

Can you tell me how to do that? I see a checkbox for that in FontExplorer Preferences/General, but the implication is that there must be a request from the application. That would seem to cover the case where an HTTP email arrives using a font that Mail doesn't recognize, but how to I get...

    OpenOffice Fonts and Printing

I am running OpenOffice 2.0 under Mac OS 10.4.8. I believe those are both the latest versions. You are correct that Linotype FontExplorer X was no help. But it did make one thing clear to me. With the exception of Courier, none of the fonts listed by FontExplorer is available in...

    OpenOffice Fonts and Printing

OpenOffice Writer offers only 17 fonts out of the I-don't-know-how-many that came installed on my iMac. It doesn't even include Times New Roman. The spreadsheet offers a few more fonts, including Times, but not Times New Roman. Oddly, I imported an RTF document in Times New Roman and that...
