Is it at all possible that the disk won't mount because the iMac has a password protected login? Just curious because target disc mode would seem like an all too easy way to bypass the login.

Tried your first suggestion and I do in fact see the hard drive when I look in Disc Utility and System Profiler but not on my desktop (attaching some screen shots if it helps). Not sure about next steps though... Also, when it's in target disc mode is it best to just to do a hard restart again...
