does that mean you're turned on by people who like one button mice? ;) Don't know where I was going with that but if I remember, I'll let you know.

    Fink Selfupdate

my fink selfupdate-cvs seems to be broken. Anyone else have troubles with it? It stops here: cvs server: Updating dists/unstable/main/finkinfo/x11-system cvs server: Updating dists/unstable/main/finkinfo/x11-wm ### su failed, exit code 1 Failed: Updating using CVS failed. Check the error...

    Jaguar Finder -> Cocoa?

People say that carbon doesn't matter but I believe it does. Sure the speed should be about equivalent if coded correctly (even though usually it isn't) but the other thing I'm looking for is the cocoa capabilities like background scrolling. When Omniweb is below Adium, or vica verca, I can hit...

How would a move to x86 would effect current users?

I concur with Macko. x86 is ancient. All the smart people I know who use x86 (for unix, not windows. I said they were smart, remember?) say that it's outdated and on the way out. One of them is actually thinking about making his next computer 68k and he praises it constantly. Iff Apple decides...

    Apple Camera

That would be pretty cool but if you're in the market now, I'd say you wouldn't want to wait. If there are any plans at all, it's probably in the long distance range. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Apple fills out the digital hub (aka competes with everything Sony has to offer) but one thing...

    Installing Darwin 1.4?

I fear I don't know the answer but I have another question to tack on to this one. Will 10.2 use any updated Darwin stuff? We have the OpenDarwin project, so do the trees ever merge? I think I heard that 10.2 was using OpenBSD 4.4 rather than the current 4.3 so will that change anything for...

comparing Darwin to other unix varieties

Darwin isn't technically posix but it's supposedly more so than OpenBSD which it's based on and most people consider OpenBSD to be pretty close. I too am confused about where Darwin is kept. Aqua is built on top of Darwin, so the whole system is Darwin, just with a shiny face.

    Coursey's take on .Mac

It's well worth it if you need it. Like they say on their web site, the total package would add up to $250 or something but for just 99$ you get everything you could possibly need. Problem being that nobody needs everything they could possibly need. $99 is too much for just an email but...

DID you subscribe to .Mac ?

I'm pretty sure this is a rhetorical no, but is .mac ever going to be a suffix like .com? People were criticizing MS for calling theirs .net cause they cause confusion with otherthings.net but will .mac ever happen? Will we ever see www.apple.mac or www.quicktime.mac? Or better yet, will we see...

To Jaguar or not to Jaguar?

Haha, the local dealership is giving away (used) KIAs with new cars. Just thought I'd share. Yeah this is going to be a pretty cool update. I'm going to buy it simply based on the rumors of the speed. The Gui sounds revamped too plus other things that tie it closer with the BSD core to make...

    Overall Reaction to MacWorld

I didn't get anything I wanted and lost something I truly loved, @mac So except for that little whine, it was an average conference. I'm still pissed about my email, but I'll get over it. The things offered will be a good spring board to new and cool things to come.

    .Mac Petition

I used my @mac.com account cause I thought it would be permanent. I don't care about storage space, and while I do host my web site on mac.com it's only for the advertisement factor. I have a university account for free but I don't use it because it will die in 3 years when I graduate. 3 years...

    Who uses themes?

The ONLY theme I use is for X windows, and I use window maker. I have never found a theme (OS X or older) that didn't get in the way. Personal preference I guess.

    Using OS 9 or X?

True true. Didn't Steve say at the last Macworld conference that only like 10% had switched over to X. I for one have not used classic application for over a month, and it's only when I want to play Risk II. I have not booted into Classic since I ripped out the old hard drive and installed...

http://www.dailycamera.com/bdc/business_plus/article/0,1713,BDC_2462_1263214,00.html Now this is how you sell people on Macintosh. I was so happy to see this in the business section of my paper this morning. Real people see this and know it's a real person, not a switch actor. It's a nice...

    Jaguar Distribution

I think it has to do with your level in the ADC. The people who pay money to get the bigger packages are probably the ones who get the Pre-releases, but then I'm just guessing.

    Xserve-like new PowerMac Tower enclosure.

That's a cool idea :) We thought we had bus bottle necks before, just wait until you try to use firewire as a system bus like that

    Why buy an Apple?

My parents are web/print designers, and they use Macintosh. As owners of the small business, they were approached by a senior graphic design student at the metro college asking if he could fill an internship requirement with them. They thought, "Why not? it's free labor and maybe we can teach...

Recompiling UNIX and Linux software for OSX

Do note that it's not all fun and games. You could probably get a text only linux app to compile in this way but I've tried many programs such as Gaim and BZflag which didn't ever work because libraries were missing. We may well have those libraries but it was too time consuming to find what...
