Compare MacOS X Server to Windows Server 2003

The Mac OS X Server is going to have a lower cost of ownership and much lower software costs. Open Directory is a great Directory Service, though Mac OS X client will integrate into an Active Directory more readily than Windows into Open Directory. With that said, if you have ~50 or so Windows...

    iMac 24", 2 GB, 7600 review

Sure. Its a good site. I could also just use the machines sitting in front of me too. :) Michael

    iMac 24", 2 GB, 7600 review

Cool. I'm happy to add in whatever feedback I can. Like I said, I have four different dual core Intel machines here, so I'm happy to provide any info I can! I did make some changes to my Mac Pro config. I added a Raptor 10k RPM 150GB HD as the primary disk. I had a 160GB SATA drive that I...

    iMac 24", 2 GB, 7600 review

I've been waiting to hear some feedback on the 24". Congrats! I used to have an iMac G5 and just loved the unit. Super quiet, ran cool and handled even complex tasks. Of course, the Intel iMac, with the dual core chips just took that a step further! :) I just received my new Intel baby as...

Windows XP loses connection on OS 10.4 server.

What version of 10.4 server are you using? Also, anything in the Windows logs on the server itself? Michael

    Dock Difficulties

Could be that you are still publishing stale MCX. Check to see if you have conflicting MCX entries in WGM between groups and machines. You also may want to flush out the MCX cache on the machines to see if that helps. Michael

Managed Clients - command to refresh policy

The application didn't exist prior to 10.4. You can try deleting out the preference files and the appropriate entries in the NetInfo database by using NetInfo manager. Something to consider. :) Michael

How to upgrade OSX 10.3 users to 10.4 using ARD ?

You can blend the two, but ARD itself can't update clients between major versions of the OS, as you'd need to boot off of secondary media and have the ARD agent running at once. You can, however, take the generic Tiger DVD and use System Image Utility to create an image of the media. When...

OSX Server - Mail / Calender Compatability

Yes, Zimbra can be used seamlessly between platforms. For your Windows clients, using Outlook, they'll even have the ability to connect over MAPI, just like they would to Exchange. It is really a great solution that scales well. Let me know if you have any additional questions. I'm happy to...

OSX Server - Mail / Calender Compatability

If you are just looking to set up this solution and want collaboration like Exchange would provide, you can look at third party products, such as Zimbra or begin anticipating the new services in Leopard that will support similar functionality, with the added CalDAV support. Of course, you could...

    Sound card plist error

You may want to post this in a more appropriate forum here - you probably won't get much of a response in the server forum. Sorry! :) I would have suggested trashing all of the preference files, re-installing and trying again. Michael

    Mac integrating into AD environment

So, there are two behaviors. By default, the Mac OS X client will simply mount the home share on the desktop, over SMB. You can use network home directories as well. The best way to do that is by integrating an Xserve with the AD environment and allowing it to provide a proper AFP...

    Mac integrating into AD environment

This is the work that I do pretty much daily. :) Mac OS X is a great AD domain member. It can integrate very well, using all the AD users/groups/passwords and Kerberos, meaning the server can be a part of a true single sign on environment with strong password authentication, something you...

    Streaming Server

One other idea you may want to look at is Podcasting. We all know students have iPods, they could also have the content in that format as well. :) I think you'll find the QTSS to be very robust, easy to use and will meet your needs. I ran one for a few years on 10.1 Server with very good...

    Streaming Server

You can really go either way. Obviously, the streaming server is well tuned for multiple connections and for dispensing multimedia content. If these are all playing over the internal LAN, you should have ample bandwidth to support your need, depending on your network layout, speeds, setup...

    Wwdc

Just a quick thanks to those of you who made it out to WWDC and introduced yourselves. Not sure how many folks were from this site, but it's always great meeting folks from the Apple community. Also, major props to all the folks that filled up the room for the Active Directory integration...

    Net Install Troubles

Eh, that's mostly true. I've seen images pushed around 18GB over NFS. Yeah, it may be true that you could encounter issues, which is why I suggested making a vanilla issue to try out the basic functionality of the server component and the ability for the server and the client to talk to each...

    Net Install Troubles

Nathan, Try using System Image Utility to create the image.* In fact, start small.* Take the generic Tiger DVD and make an image of that.* If you can push that and install, your in good shape to start.* Then progress to custom images. Also, check to see if you are compressing the image.* This...
