    synch users over network

Sure, you could, but why not just use Open Directory, which has built in synchronization, a Kerberos KDC and so forth? :) Michael

    Migrating 10.2 mail into 10.4

Sorry, I think I may be missing the steps that you took to perform this. It sounds like you moved the server info to a firewire disk, which is fine and then reimported it using the GUI to the new server, so I assumed that the mail info was cloned/backed up/moved between machines/drives/systems...

    Migrating 10.2 mail into 10.4

I have done this previously and I had migrated the users before migrating the email accounts. Did that work for you previously? Also, how are you moving the AppleMailServer itself? Michael

    Cache size

I'd suggest using Portable Homes, instead of Network Homes, regardless. You can specify in the PHD's which directories not to synchronize as well. Michael

    Cant get it working

Yeah, that would be a mighty large issue. :) This means that there isn't a single service principal created for your KDC. I would say that since you had KDC issues to begin with, this ultra important file was never created. Michael

    Cant get it working

Could be bunches of things: 1. Time skew? Use the same NTP for all boxes. Anything more than a couple minutes will fail this. 2. Setup progression. Before building any services, you want to have your DNS *perfect*. Setting it up afterwards in all probability is too late, even if some...

Running OSX v10.4 Server on ??

Hi - Depends on how old of a tower and how much load you think the server will be under. You could always start it up on the older G4 and see if it fits your needs. I used to run District13 Computing on an 867MHz G4 up until Tiger. It now runs on a PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8GHz with 3GB of RAM...

Export and Import User Command Line

Ahhhh, you had said that you didn't need the passwords, so I assumed you were just simply going to select all of the users via WGM and type in a generic password for them to use. That process also upgrades the password type being used without having to explicitly change it manually. Then maybe...

    Michael Bartosh

If anyone is interested, a scholarship fund has been set up in his memory. This fund will help send a deserving, student age engineer to the MacIT conference at MacWorld: http://www.macworldexpo.com/michaelbartoshmemorialscholarship Michael

    Probably a stupid question.

Wow. Ummmm... Are you authenticated as a directory administrator, which is by default, the shortname diradmin to the directory? After logging in via WGM, look right underneath the button bar to see the directory to which you are authenticated. You may need to go all the way to the right...

Export and Import User Command Line

Upon re-import, if you select all of the accounts in WGM and attempt to apply a password change to all of the user accounts, you'll get what you want. When you import, it lists a simplistic crypt password type. When you update the password value, it then creates, in the case of NetInfo, a more...

    Probably a stupid question.

Shouldn't be. Are you sure that Kerberos is working? On the client, type klist in the Terminal right after logging in. You should have a TGT from the KDC responsible for the network. If you don't, or it is invalid, stop there, that means you have something going on with your KDC itself. If...

    Wwdc

All - Just curious if anyone from the board, besides for the scholarship winner in the main news forum, will be attending WWDC. Make sure to let me know! I always enjoy meeting folks from my different associations. Michael

    Got a WWDC Scholarship!

Well, the commercial developer rates are up already and are about $200/night, which isn't bad for that area of SF. I glanced through some hotel listings in general and found some that looked pretty OK for $99 a night. It does state on the student page that there will be hotel information...

    Got a WWDC Scholarship!

It is well worth it, IMO. Like I said, I've done the last three years and it has truly given me the leg up on all of my projects. In 2003, I was able to deploy Panther at least six months earlier based on the conference. For IT folks or programmers, its the best conference of the year. I'd...

    Michael Bartosh

Michael was one of the gurus in all that was Mac OS X Server. He wrote the Essential Mac OS X Panther Server Administration book and contributed greatly to the Server community. Here is a link to the book on Amazon, if you are interested. It is truly an excellent book to have...

    Got a WWDC Scholarship!

The program includes the admission to the conference, daily lunch and snacks as well as Student Sunday, which includes programming projects with Apple folks. Apple, historically, has found special pricing for students at local hotels, but that is not included in the package. Michael

Export and Import User Command Line

If you just want the LDAP or NetInfo data, you could just use the WGM program. Point it to the proper node and export. Just to confirm, this is in the NetInfo DB or in the shared LDAP DB? Michael

    iBook CDROM freezes computer

You might want to post this in a forum more geared towards system troubleshooting. Since this is the Server forum, you may not get the response you need. With that said... Have you tried logging in as a different user to see if it is profile related? Maybe try booting off a different volume...
