    apt-get update 403 error

Hi, For the past several weeks I've been unable to get apt-get to update. I've been getting an 403 Forbidden IP error. Has there been a recent change in the sourceforge repositories that I need to include in my system settings? I've atteched the output of my update attempts...

    Where did wget command go?

Yes, you're right, I think. I guess I'm assuming that simple is a UNIX/Linux user so he's already installed fink and the XCode tools. If he doesn't have this installed we'd get a comment back about, "I can't find apt-get" :7)

    x11 won't accept remote connection

Did you check the sshd_config on the server computer also? ---- You had X11 forwarding working before? What changed between when it worked and when it didn't?

    Where did wget command go?

If you're familiar with the linux tool apt-get you can also use this to install software. sudo apt-get install wget Also make certain that your path includes the /sw/bin/ directory, which is where wget and all of the useful software is stored after being installed.

    x11 won't accept remote connection

Check that the the /etc/ssh_config and /etc/sshd_config files allow for X11Forwarding. I don't know about Macintosh, but in other OSs this needs to be set when the sshd is first installed.

    Trouble With Fftw

You've probably checked this already, but it's worth asking here anyhow... Is f77 installed in /sw/bin ? Is /sw/bin in your $PATH ?

I can delete my files in someone elses drop box

The Drop Box folder has permission (drwx-wx-wx) so anyone can write to it and execute from it, but only the owner has permission to read what exists in the folder. If I copy from something that I own to another user's Drop Box the permissions of the file is the same as it was when I had it...

Trying to learn UNIX!!! For Mac OS X!

Very true. :7) Yes, strickly OSX is a Unix and is based upon a branch of BSD. I've come to OSX from GNU/Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat). I've used a variety of other Unix platforms (DEC, IRIX, True64, AIX) and find that with a few exceptions they all have a similar feel and behavior...

Trying to learn UNIX!!! For Mac OS X!

Compared to MSWindows yes, OSX and UNIX are similar. Comparing namebrand UNIX/Linux OS's and OSX, the slew of UNIX/Linux OS's have more in common with one another than with OSX. OSX is built on UNIX, but it adds to it, which gives the OS a different feel. My recommendation to...

Trying to learn UNIX!!! For Mac OS X!

I'm coming to Mac from the GNU/Linux. I like the Mac, but it is different from UNIX/Linux. It is more than just BSD vesus SysV, many of the commands are overridden by the Mac OS. For example, the "hostname" command is used the change the name of the computer in GNU/Linux and UNIX. In...

Really want to run these graphic programs/applications- Help Please

The OSX POVRay version uses it's own input screen. The Unix version is command line based, thus a software package can write the pov file and run it. You can toy with the OSX version and then uninstall it for the Unix version if (when) needed. sb

Really want to run these graphic programs/applications- Help Please

POV-Ray is the engine that does the rendering (http://www.povray.org/). kpovmodeler is the workspace that you use to make your model. According to the kpovmodeler website you need povray installed. I don't know if it is difficult to (or if it is necessary to) compile POV-Ray to get it to...

    wireless powerbook

Thanks, I have a 12" powerbook which explains why I can't find a PCMCIA slot. It's good to know that the USB hardware is generic. In addition to the wireless card I'm also looking for a firewire/USB external hard drive that I can use with both my Linux workstation and Mac powerbook. sb

    wireless powerbook

Hi, I have a Powerbook G4 that has an airport extreem card built in. I'm shopping for other wireless network cards. I have two questions. 1) Do Powerbooks support PCMCIA cards? There doesn't seem to be place to plug one in, but I really know nothing about Macintosh hardware, so I...

Really want to run these graphic programs/applications- Help Please

I'm curious if you get kpovmodeler to work on Mac easily. I installed POV-Ray on my Mac but apparently the command-line doesn't work in the Mac version. In GNU/Linux I can write a pov file and then use the command povray filename.pov -geometry 9000x6000 to create the image. On...

Really want to run these graphic programs/applications- Help Please

Check you $PATH variable. I think that /sw/bin might be in your path already. If not you can add it so that you only need to type gimp.

    Help installing putty under x11

Is putty == PuTTY, the ssh terminal emulator (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/)? I can't seem to find other references to the search "putty software" in google, but I don't understand exactly why you'd want a terminal emulator when osx has one built in.

MySQL changed the $PATH. Any idea how to change it back?

How are /bin/sw added to the PATH? I thought that it would be in /etc/profile or /etc/bashrc, but this is not the case. Can anyone explain the steps that osx uses to build the path i.e. What are the configuration files that are read and what order are they read? In your case, perhaps...
