    Pinging in the terminal

not at my mac for the moment, but in freebsd 4.6 its ping -c 5 the 5 being the number of times you want it to attempt the ping. If this doesn't work on your mac, check out the manpage man ping

    .Mac Petition

I can see how using a .mac email address can be a symbolic gesture of support for apple, but how many of you people really use it? Didn't everyone get an email address when they signed up with their ISP? I admit that I signed up for my itools account when I bought my powerbook, but I already...

    How to redirect URLs?

Are you running your own DNS server? If so you could add the microsoft.com zone to your name server and then assign its ip # there... Or add it to your /etc/host file (well its equivelent in the netinfo database) and assuming your computer is setup to check the hosts file before DNS, then it...

    vi editor

vi has been around since the dawn of epoch time. It was one of the first editors used by UNIX hackers from days gone by. While it has been updated over the years to work on every flavor of *NIX out there, a look at its origins explain alot when you consider how unintuitive it is. The first...

Anyone read this yet... I tend to agree.

but often times, perception becomes reality. I guess time will tell on whether or not Joe Schmo PC user will take the bait and make the jump to the Mac. In theory I liked the idea of apples ad campaign, but in excution I feel the author of the article had some valid points. 3.5% market share...

    Script Running

zsh should be able to run most bourne shell scripts... according to zsh's website. It too is a superset of bourne shell with some nifty command line editing and globbing features... give it a try with zsh... if it doesn't work, get bash from apples website.

    Script Running

just tell it to run it via the command line (make sure that its executable) download your script.sh chmod 755 script.sh (makes it executable) ./script.sh will run it. If you save it in a directory that is in your $PATH variable, you don't need the ./ in front of the name. Or you can...

Download Virtual Desktops for OS X

If you were to put numbers in each box to show which desktop was being represented, the user would remember where he was using mozilla and where he had photoshop open. If you look at KDE or Windowmaker, they don't show you previews and the switching flies. One caviat to this though, you would...

Download Virtual Desktops for OS X

Your program shows great promise, but coming from an X-windows world, its pretty slow when changing from one desktop to another. Another minor grip I have is that the boxes that you draw in the title bar only toggles whether or not you see the pager boxes. I would prefer that you made an...

    Connecting to a Windows printer

Not all printers that are connected to windows boxes are postscript printers... in fact, most aren't. This in my opinion is one of Mac OSX's greatest faults at the moment. Postscript is great and all, but when the majority of printers out there aren't postscript, its a bit elitist to exclude...

    CUPS in 10.2?

For those of you with 10.2 installed, does it have cups included or not. If so, have you gotten it to work with IPP://myprinthost.com:631/hpdeskjet yet? Internet Printing Protocol. Are they building its functionality into the print manager or are they just making you set it up as you would...

    Connecting to a Windows printer

Search the forums for your answer... its in there, I found it myself. Basically it involves setting up your windows box as a lpd printer server, then redirecting postscript output from your mac through a ghostscript filter on your pc, which in turn passes its output to your normal printer...

'kill' didn't kill XDarwin after using MacGimp.

When you type kill 531, you are basically asking nicely for to the computer to please shutdown the pid 531. Try Kill -9 841 and let your computer know who the superuser really is :)
