    Pretty pathetic

Sorry for the delay in replying...I sort of forgot about this thread :) <sheepish grin>. Nope, I never fixed it completely but I did take everything apart and somehow managed to put it all back together again. Yup, I agree, I am going to get a new iBook before I spend any more money on this...

    Happy Birthday, Racer X!

Happy B-day to one of the great macosx.com veterans around here, finally returned after the...hiatus, but nevermind that, Racer X is back! Yay! :) Those of us who remember that far back know how great your posts always have been, especially about Rhapsody! Have a great day Racer, buy yourself...

Why Apple can't disable OS 9 booting completely

Here's a common hypothetical situation: Say I just bought a new PowerMac G4 1.4 GHz, released 1 month after this upcoming MWSF (I said hypothetical:)). Like Apple said, it can't boot OS 9 natively. I buy it with a 30 GB hard drive, but want to use an 80 GB drive I had from before. I format the...

    Anyone familar with OC'ing a PowerBook G3?

I am considering overclocking my WallStreet (below are specs) from 300 to 333 or 350 MHz. How do you do it? I found some Japanese pages a year ago but didn't want to risk the language problems screwing up anything...but OS X just needs a speed boost. So...anyone know, or have English...

    Pretty pathetic

Hi again Matt, If you are referring to the Mac OS taking up 129 MB of RAM, it's most likely not the Finder taking up that space but a huge memory leak caused by an extension or control panel (or maybe corrupt System). Are you running any beta/really old/really new/1.0.0 extensions/control...

    Paranoid Android

That's really cool looking! Actually, one question: how on earth did you draw that entire thing with a mouse :)? Did you mean with a tablet as well? I can't begin to imagine having the patience to draw something that complex with a mouse...it's just so hard to control subtleties in the drawing -...

oooohhhh..."cobalt blue glass"...is that the shiny opaque polished blue stuff? Post some pics! it sounds nice :).

jpg or gif screen shots in 10.2

I don't know Apple's reasoning behind removing functionality in OS X, but I do know that the TinkerTool option is there but grayed out because Jaguar takes screenshots through CoreGraphics now (a PDF system), but that version of TinkerTool runs on both 10.1 and 10.2, so the options unavailable...

    system slowdown...

I heard permissions errors caused slowdowns in Jaguar; try running Disk Util and verifying permissions. Otherwise, try reinstalling Jag.

a Switcher... (story after the switch!)

I'm not surprised you support OmniGroup, RacerX (and welcome back to macosx.com by the way) :)! As far as I know they are one of the few former Rhapsody developers that have "made it" with Mac OS X. (Actually I don't know that much about Rhapsody as I'd like to but I see from Omni's old stuff on...

    Quitting The Finder...

No no no, you don't have to have the Finder always on for the system to work! That would be VERY bad if the system depended on the Finder. I think it is possible to do this in 10.2 (it was possible in 10.0 and 10.1) through TinkerTool, it's working for me! Maybe if you reinstall TinkerTool or...

a Switcher... (story after the switch!)

Yes, I agree it would be ridiculous for the Finder to calculate a database of all the folder information. But I think the delay is caused more by bad programming than the Finder actually taking that long. For example in OS 9 or 10.1 (don't remember 10.0) that window came up very quickly...

How does Jag differ so much, not retro-compatible?

Also, quite a few new small shareware apps (with authors who apparently don't care about millions of 10.1 users :)) have used the new brushed metal theme in 10.2 without giving users the option to turn it off. So, a new brushed metal app will launch on 10.1 but instantly quit. (at least that...

    Power Down from Sleep?

We can help more if you tell us what kind of PowerBook you have. You should be able to swap batteries when the PowerBook is unplugged because there is a little internal battery that can keep the PB asleep for about 1 minute when there isn't a power cord or battery plugged in.

    OS X Won't Go

Yeah, that's true but only if you have OS X on a separate partition (or device like a CD). Hopefully Apple will make it eventually possible to choose at boot time on the same partition...

a Switcher... (story after the switch!)

I mean, the Finder is basically the most important application in OS X. Yet, Apple used Carbon, not Cocoa, they ruined the spatial system we had before with a poorly-done cross between the Windows and Mac style, and they had the chance to make better error messages (they are reknowned for great...

If Apple said hello to Nintendo

Is it true that GameCube mini-DVDs spin backwards to be read? My friend who has a GC told me that, but if all GC games are just mini-DVDs that wouldn't make any sense. oh well, there goes my friend trying to sound like he knows everything as usual :).

Does post count affect the chances? Only because there are a whole lot of people who have registered just to get a chance at winning (lots of 1 post counts in this thread) ;). Anyway, count me in please :).

    Is my PowerBook dying? Again.

Good thing that problem is solved! :) But...when you say the problem is gone, do you mean the screen brightness forgetting its settings, or the weird image that's displayed at shutdown? (or both?) Just wondering if you cured the weird shutdown image, because it's bugging enough to try and fix...

    Is my PowerBook dying? Again.

...oh, and by the way, I bet my G3 is a LOT slower than your "Slowest G3 in the World" :p!
