    Mac mini

Well, as usual they do add up qiuck. For the 1.42GHz version with 512MB RAM, a SuperDrive, and the Bluetooth + AirPort Extreme add-ons, $903 US.

    Mac mini

I could see owning three or four of these just for testing various OS versions quickly and easily. That'll do until something like VMware exists for OS X, if ever.

    Mac mini

I'm ordering one right now. My only real complaint about it is that the built-in video is a Radeon 9200 with only 32MB of RAM. 64MB of video RAM would have really made it much more useful (for me). But honestly it's still a great box and setup.

Still no PowerBook updates. I'm going to have to wait forever. :( That Mac mini sure is great, though :)

    10.3.7 is here!

No doubt; this one has been a huge PITA for me lately.

    Java Update!

Argh... This has been my only real issue with moving to the Mac. Everything else has gone fairly well, even though everything else was slower... the Java stuff is the only thing that approaches show-stopper status for me. Oh well...G5 powerbooks someday...

    Java Update!

That was with the client hotspot. I tried the server one and it basically had the same results. This is a tiny numeric processing app, so it won't really stress either of them. I just tried my favorite IDE, IntelliJ IDEA, and it seemed faster, but it would take an a few hours of work with it...

    Java Update!

Well, this is quite a surprise. The little application I was testing was running about 1.5 seconds on average with the previous Java. This update 2 reduced the run time down to 0.5 seconds. For comparison, the same app on a 2.4GHz P4 has been running 0.4 seconds, and 0.1 seconds on a 3.0GHz...

    Java Update!

Interesting timing... I've been playing around with benchmarking a few Java apps today, it will be interesting to see if this is any faster.

    iMac G5

I wonder how the screen quality in the iMac will compare to the other Apple displays... I'd hate for it to be less quality, but I'm going to guess that it will be given the price point.

    iBook vs. PowerBook performance

Yeah, same version here. Interesting. I wonder why it would be different for me. By any chance does that Virex thing from .Mac do anything with the browser? I got the impression it was a boot-time scan only, but that is just an assumption...

    iBook vs. PowerBook performance

You don't notice a dramatic difference in "frame rate" on the animated gifs between Safari and Firefox, especially on the first link? Firefox is displaying them about twice as fast as Safari does (and indeed about the same rate I see them on other hardware).

    iBook vs. PowerBook performance

IntelliJ IDEA, actually. It's been the fastest (and certainly most productive) Java IDE I've used. It performs well even on a 1GHz P3, but no where near useful level on this 1GHz G4.

    iBook vs. PowerBook performance

I haven't tried Netscape at all on here; Firefox has always been quite a bit faster than regular Netscape or even regular Mozilla. I do visit a lot of web forums, which is where I notice it a lot. Actually any place with animated gifs is what kills it especially. I can really tell the...

    iBook vs. PowerBook performance

Interesting. One of the reasons I tried the switch was all the geeks I saw at JavaOne and when I visited Sun that were using PowerBooks for their Java development. Maybe they're just very patient people (or jusst doing their editing with vim!)

    iBook vs. PowerBook performance

The "executive summary" question: how much real-world performance would I see going from a 1GHz G4 iBook to a 1.5GHz G4 PowerBook? The background: I "switched" my productivity machine from a high-end PC to this iBook a few months ago. I specifically went low-end in case this experiment...
