.... but seeing as this is a thread discussing the relative merits of the PB12" and the iBook, the "you can change the battery without shutting down" (I paraphrase) statement was a bit misleading. Still - it was worth a try. But this is what Apple has to say on the subject of changing the PB12"...

symphonix - erm, are you sure you not just talking (typing) out of you backside?? :);) I just tried that with my old iBook for which I have two batteries. And guess what? It didn't stay alive. So no hot swap there. (Yes, I did put it in sleep mode first). I'm fsck'ing it as we speak :) C

Ooooh - now there are two interesting facts. I did *not* know that you could hot-swap the battery. Haven't seen mention of it anywhere, neither ... synmphonix - is this something you've actually tried? Or is it hearsay :) Hulkaros: Do you happen to know the make of these 3rd party batteries...

Zammy-Sam: now you mention it - yup, it does rock a bit (bottom right to top left). But not too bad, thankfully. Plus I mostly use it on my lap, so I hadn't noticed it till you said :) Hulkaros: I've done all those things :) I know that the PBs won't last as long - they have a G4 in them...

The one thing not to do is to stop recharging before the battery is full. That stops the battery from being recalibrated successfully. Plus, I've also found (although it could just be my imagination) that the recalibration works better if you stop charging the moment its full (light goes from...

You took it slightly too far. You're only supposed to run it until it goes to sleep from alone - then you charge it till the green light comes on. That's the re-calibration process of the battery as prescribed by Apple. I only know this coz I just happened to have to do that today as well - and...

AHA! It would, however, appear that the battery is not yet calibrated entirely correctly: I'm currently sitting here with the PB on, and the battery read out claims its at 0%. And its been like that for the last five minutes or so :) There's hope yet :) C

This is just unreal! I seem to be loosing more than 1% a minute!! That translates to <2hrs battery life. That's just sucky! C

At least its not just me, then :) ... I was a bit horrified to see that it had dropped 13% in sleep mode! I mean, its not like the PB should be using more energy in sleep mode than the iBook?? They must have just put a lower quality battery in the PB or something ... C

I was going to wait. But then my iBook screen went a bit worbly, so I need a replacement ASAP :( Plus, I was going to wait until Panther came out to get me HW update, so that I don't then have to shell out for the new OS *as well*. Its just all going a bit awry. C
