    CD-RW in OS X

Roxio's Direct CD will do this. We have it at work and it is one feature I sorely wish was in OS X: and is available for Roxio used to have some stuff on their website as to why packet writing is not compatible with OSX but they seem to have pulled it as I couldn't find it anywhere - I think...

Issues with Excel w/ 10.2.8 and Panther

That's actually excellent that you got such a high level of support from Microsoft.

No S.M.A.R.T. status in Panther's Disk Utility?

Also the S.M.A.R.T. status is only displayed for the root level of the disk. So e.g. if you have two partitions neither partition will display SMART status but the root drive will. Same goes for if you only have one partition.

    Japan and Australia gets iTMS

As the article says Apple are just in negotiations with record companies at the moment, that's no indication that it is going to happen. A lot of people over here (stirred up by Australian Macworld) are really pissed off that .Mac costs us more than what it does in America without iTMS, photo...

Kernel Panics .. how often do you get them?

As I said above I've had one in Panther which happened immediately upon rebooting after installing printer drivers. Apart from that Panther is extremely stable, the only things I've had to Force Quit so far were the Microsoft Office updaters, which is an acknowledged problem.

    printing from Classic on Panther

No, that's the way its meant to be. OSX and OS9 use completely different printer drivers.

    Microsoft Office Help!!!!

The best way to do this is to run Disk Utility which is in the Utilities folder within your Applications folder. From within Disk Utility select your startup drive then Repair Permissions. The reason that this is better than repairing permissions from the install CD is that you are using the...

Issues with Excel w/ 10.2.8 and Panther

The first thing I'd suggest is updating Excel to version 10.1.5 if you haven't already. The initial release of Office v.X was very buggy. All the updates for Office v.X are at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#OfficeX.

The "Logs" folder took 700Mb disk space...

You can also change your crontab to run your daily, weekly and monthly scripts at a time when your computer will be awake. Here's the link that describes how to do it - its actually very easy.

    X11 on Jaguar?

That doesn't surprise me. The Australian site lags way behind the American site as far as software updates go.

Kernel Panics .. how often do you get them?

Ditto from me, except not so many in 10.1 I was actually blown away by the KP, I'd just rebooted after installing an updated printer driver when up came the multi-lingual KP screen.

    OS x Panther upgrade

Are you sure you have a 10.3 Install CD, not a 10.3 Upgrade CD? The Upgrade CD will only upgrade 10.2 to 10.3. For 10.0 to 10.1 you only have the option of doing an "Archive & Install" or a "Clean Install".

    OS x Panther upgrade

You have to select the hard rive first and then select options, i.e. is options still grayed out even after selecting your hard drive? Also once you've first booted from the Install CD at the stage where you select the language go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility. Once in Disk...

G5 and Cinema Display power for Australia

Well the Apple Australia page linked to above makes it sound like it does but to make 100% sure I'd try ringing Apple Australia. They're number from in Australia is 133 MAC, I don't know how you'd go ringing that from over there (after you'd put in the country code etc.), it might get you through.

    OS x Panther upgrade

It means that you can't do an upgrade install from to 10.0 to 10.3. You will have to choose to either do an "archive and install" or a "clean install" (available under "options" if it doesn't come up automatically). An archive and install will preserve your user settings such as your network...

G5 and Cinema Display power for Australia

Just to confirm - American power chords do not plug directly into our sockets. You can buy an adapter but I would go for the new power chord when you get here.

    USB Drives, recommendations?

This is about the geekiest thing I've ever bought, but over the weekend went down to the bright lights of Wagga Wagga (pop. 65, 000) looking to buy a watch and a USB Drive to transfer files between home and work and ended up getting both - the DSE Dataspy. So far its been working fine and has a...

When Did your Battery for any of your macs die?

I've just had the PRAM battery go in my iMac after just 18 months. My computer is nearly always plugged in and turned on so I think I must have just got a bad one. I've ordered a replacement one but it hasn't arrived yet.

    best all in one?

My partner and I have an Epson Stylus CX3100 on our home network and its perfect for what we want. The print, scan and copy output is all great quality. I find it strange that Pengu says to stay away from Epson but then reccomends HP. HP have a very bad reputation for their drivers causing...
