    Help needed: getting the job

worth a shot. Sometimes a long ass wire is the best solution. Try and keep it either completely horizontal or completely vertical, if at all possable. Cheers!

    Setting Permissions

uhh yeah, thats how you do it. It might be useful to envoke chmod with the -R option, and simply list the path to the folder you want chmodded - this will change everything in that folder, and any sub folders. Sounds like the directions specified several files, so you can either do this...

    Help needed: getting the job

I might spell this wrong, but it was for a chain called: Drug Emplorium. Every group of students got to do the same comercial - we just synced up a VTR to a Macintosh G4 connected to a ProTools Control 24, and added in all the sound. Plus recorded narration. As for your question, I assume...

Sharing between XP and OS X not going as planned

You could build a script to do this on the mac (or the pc, but I'd have no idea how to do that), and have the script copy files back and forth. But, it might be a better solution to just keep the files on either computer, and have the share automatically mount (show up on the desktop)...

    Going off to college....

Suggestions, eh? I might have a few.... computers first: The first line of defence is Social Engineering. Put the passwords on your computer (open firmware, login, screensaver), and explain to the people you live around (actually, /brag/ about this) that your computer is locked down...

Sharing between XP and OS X not going as planned

I believe, on windows, you can right click on "My network places" and choose "map network drive". If you have enabled windows file sharing in the System Preferences' "Network" panel, then you should be able to simply type in the ip address into this box on xp/windows/whatever. As for...

    Help needed: getting the job

Those are very good suggestions, thanks. I've got a demo cd (though, I need to duplicate it a few times) of some stuff I got to either mix or record at the workshop, and some of it is quite good. I even did some audio on a tv comercial, and I have that on vhs. As for going back to school...

Sharing between XP and OS X not going as planned

Have you tried specifying the PC's network name or IP address in Mac OS X's "connect to server..." dialogue box? I've had a heck of a time getting windows boxes to "see" each other, so its understandable what you're going through. Go to the connect to server dialogue, and type it in...

    Network Cable Woes

yup, that box crossovers your cable. A crossover cable just switches the RX and TX lines (which are blanced, two wires each). That box does exactly this - it inverts the polarity.

    Help needed: getting the job

Basically, I've been at the Recording Workshop in chillocothe ohio for the past month or so, and I've graduated (top 10 percent), and now I need a job :) Work in the studio (audio engineering) has got to be similar to software design and such, as its a fusion of art and technology. So I...

    Hackers forcing switching

And don't forget Blender, BRL CAD (U.S. Military program, free download), linuxcad (crap last I checked it), etc. There's a ton of 3d programs out for linux, I think there was even a port of Bryce for a while. Blender is a daunting program at first, I'll admit, and so was autocad when I...

how do i make a startup disk?

First you need to create a system disk (a cd that has the Mac OS on it), and then you just add your application to the cd, so that when the cd boots, you can double click it and launch it. This is not as easy as it could be though. A good place to start your research would be the Mac OS X...

    Network Cable Woes

One thing you can do, to easily make the other cable a crossover cable, is get one of those RJ-45 to RJ-45 adaptors (they let you connect two RJ-45 terminated cat5 cables together). Then just plug the crossover cable into that, and the long cable into the other end. Long crossover cables are...

    tip for OSX

I've been looking for the same thing, and haven't found it yet. I'm away from my osx box (its disconnected from the internet at the moment), but the internal modem on the G4's does appear in /dev/cu.modem or something. It should be possable to compile something like minicom (popular gnu...

    Disable pico's automatic hard line-wrapping?

if you're coding, I wouldn't even consider nano or pico. I used to be /the/ most anti-vi person you could imagine, and I really did hate that editor. Until I got a unix box that only had vi :). As for the interface, vi doesn't realy have much of an interface to get in the way. vim...
