    Problems copying DVD+R

I am trying to copy a DVD+R recorded on a friend's DVD recorder. The disc is a single layer 4.7Gb TDK DVD+R and I'm using Toast Titanium. The problem is that my computer thinks the DVD+R is a dual layer disc. I say the computer rather than Toast because if I open the disc and copy the VIDEO_TS...

    Can't open an Application

Sure. I was just leaving the back door open to drag the prefs files back again if the problem persists. That way you don't have to change all your settings again.

    Can't open an Application

Have you tried dragging the .plist files for the offending apps out from the Preferences folder?

    Unable to find a partition

Does the missing partition show up in DiskUtility? If so, you may be able to remove that partition and get the space back. Otherwise you may have to reformat the hard drive which will again wipe it, so backup first.

    Erasing Free Space

I wouldn't use it. If you do, don't interrupt it even if it says you won't lose any data. If interrupted, the temporary file created during the process (this is what eats up the free space) may not get deleted, effectively resulting in you ending up with less free space than when you started...

    Erasing Free Space

I haven't yet met a single person who has been able to successfully use Disk Utility's 'Erase free space' function. It simply doesn't work. You invariably get a 'disk full' error. For any sensitive files you want to get rid of just use the Finder's 'Secure Empty Trash' function. For all the...

    Safari Not Downloading Any Files

If the add-ons haven't actually modified Safari you may be able to fix your problems by deleting the Safari preference file (com.apple.Safari.plist) in your Home/Library/Preferences folder, and then restart Safari and reconfigure your download prefs. Otherwise you may have to reinstall Safari...

    photos gone from Iphoto

Have you done the essentials, like repairing permissions? If you're unsure what that means, check this old post … http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/268443-help-items-my-desktop-have-dissappeared.html If that doesn't do it, you can rebuild the iPhoto library, after...

How to unlock a locked file

If you click once on the file and go to the File menu and select 'Get Info', under the 'General' setting in the info window there is a little tick box which says 'Locked'. Make sure it is not ticked, then delete the file by moving it to the trash and emptying it. You could also delete is by...

Weird item in trash won't go away.

'Trash It' didn't do the job but repairing Windoze from the XP install disk did! The file is gone from both bins, hopefully never to return. Thanks to everyone who came with suggestions. I appreciate your help :c)

Weird item in trash won't go away.

Thanks for your replies, DICKSTER & scotlovesmacs. The 'secure empty trash' or Cocktail won't work here, I'm afraid. The problem here is that the file is not in the Mac Trash bin but in the XP Reycling bin. The computer gets confused with these two folders, it would seem. Further, the file is...

Weird item in trash won't go away.

Sorry, VirtualTracy. I didn't see your second post B4 I posted my reply. I'll try repairing Windows … as soon as I get my XP disc back from my brother-in-law. 'Don't touch that dial.'

Weird item in trash won't go away.

Sorry, VirtualTracy. I may not have made it clear that I can't actually drag the file anywhere. It simply disappears, which seems promising but when I go back to that folder the file is still there. It's like it's there but it's not … or it's not there but it is … or not … meh

Weird item in trash won't go away.

WIN XP/.Trash/501 is the path to the folder the file is in on the XP partition, and I tried rm -rf WIN XP/.Trash/501 in terminal to remove it but it stays put. I think it may have to be dealt with from within XP, not OS X, even though it technically is on the same volume.

Weird item in trash won't go away.

I have had the XP partition for 5-6 months but the weird file has only been there for a week or so. I did a search on problems with Bootcamp and similar things have happened to other people. The general opinion seem to be not to worry too much about it. The file may persist but is unlikely to...

Weird item in trash won't go away.

I have definitely identified the Windoze partition as the source of the file. It was easy. I simply 'ejected' the XP partition and the file in the trash vanished. I then mounted it again using DiskUtility and the file reappeared. I tried to use terminal to delete the file by typing… rm...

Weird item in trash won't go away.

Thanks for your reply, VirtualTracy. I can't change the name. Trying gives me a -43 error (the file/folder can't be found) which again suggests the file could be from the Windoze side of the drive. I think the computer is confusing the two trash bins with each other. Who ever founded the...

Weird item in trash won't go away.

Did some snooping with FileBuddy and found a file called "‰'g•ý" which is the first part of the name of the weird file. Probably the same file. I found it on my XP partition, more specifically .Trashes/501/‰'g•ý I rebooted in XP, emptied the Recycling bin and WHAMM……the file is still in my...
