Though it may seem kind of a newbie-ish thing to do, I recomend you watch the DVD that came with FCE. It's very precise and well documented. Be sure to watch it on a seperate dvd player than your PB though, so you can do both at the same time.

Yes, definately get more ram. 512 is suggested for OS X but really is minimum for video editing. 1 gig should be enough. I edit video with the one button mouse on my iBook, and it's not really a problem, but a scroll is very handy with video. If you're going to get one of those scroll things...
