    New to Mac

This might seem silly, but have you verified what the network settings are? (Apple Menu=>System Preferences=>Network | Show Built-in Ethernet). Since it sounds like this was a second hand machine, it might be manually configured for a different network setup. Swich it to Configure Using DHCP...

    Mac newbie (almost) requests advice

I just got a MacBook Pro and believe it or not :D the thing is pretty darn hot, especially if I use it on my lap. To combat the heat, I just picked up an iLap. Now, I didn't get the iLap for commuting or travel or anything of the like. I got it for use at home and I must say that it is really...

    Trouble deleting a "nonexistent" file

Okay-- I gave that a try and it didn't work, but I did finally figure out the problem. This was all occuring on a clean install of Mac OS X. I had prevoiusly erased the HD via DiskUtility, installed 10.4 and updated to 10.4.7. So I didn't initially suspect a corrupt drive. I was going to...

    Intel-IMac 20" Questions?

The 20 inch iMac is a great machine. I prefer it over my dual 1.8 GHz G5. Awesome display. Everything looks beautiful. UT2k4 has a universal binary, as does WoW. You can play WoW with practically full settings. Check out the WoW mac forum for more details. Currently WoW plays about a...

Boot Camp Assistant cannot be used.

Just looked into this some more and apparently the CD can only be used on machines where the firmware update was interrupted. So it looks like no dice.

Boot Camp Assistant cannot be used.

The FAQ is wrong. :D I was able to get Boot Camp Assistant to work after installing the following update: iMac (early 2006) Firmware Update 1.0.1 This firmware update is for iMac (early 2006) computers with Intel processors only. It now runs on localized systems that use languages that...

Boot Camp Assistant cannot be used.

Okay, so I thought that I might as well give this bootcamp nonsense a try. I've got a new 20-inch iMac CoreDuo @ 2GHz w/ 2GB of RAM. I run software update and my software is up to date and if I list the updates installed, it says that I've got the 5/18/06 iMac SMC Firmware Update v1.0. I've...

    Drive Mappings Persistent

I'll have to give that a try. I generally don't mount disks on login. If my applications are on a remote server I just alias them and the server will mount if I need the app. For file servers, I'll generally make an alias of any directories I'm accessing all the time and just "open" those...

    Drive Mappings Persistent

You used to be able to simply put aliases of the drives in the Login Items under your accounts system preference pane. When you login, the drive is mounted and you're asked for the username and password (unless you've saved this info in your keychain).

Intel Core Duo iMac won't boot

I've got a new 20inch iMac Core Duo (2GHz) and all the Adobe installers, save Illustrator) hang the machine. Fun, really.

Any good programs like Picasa for Mac?

I've found that with iPhoto, at least on my Mac Mini (1.42 GHz w/ 1GB RAM), the application speeds up quite considerably when the library exists on a drive other than the system drive. I have just under 6000 photos and it takes roughly 1-2 seconds to load individual photos. Could be that this...

    Switcher! Well kinda!

That's a totally BS comment. If that's true, then so is the statement that Macs are only good for artists. Again BS... Sure there aren't as many games, but I'm not bored by my options.

    Switcher! Well kinda!

FYI-- WoW plays _great_ on my iBook. (graphics turned low of course). Swimming is a pain in the back, but your fingers get pretty deft doing it. ;) Starcraft Broodwar is still my fav though... :D

installing the complete newyorker on g4/tiger

A friend of mine is trying to install the NewYorker on his computer (a flowerpot iMac G4). I asked him if he was getting any error messages and here's his response: "Error message? I put the CD in the slot and push the eject button. The slot pulls the CD into the computer and whirls it around...

    Need Answer to this...ASAP

But I think that most new Macs come with Office Test Drive. Just out of curiosity, what does Word say when you go to "About Word" under the Application menu? It should say who it is registered to, if it was previously installed by someone else.

    General OS X Maintenance

I can attest to that! I thrashed my hard drive and ended up corrupting the volume header files. What a joy that was! ;)

    Eudora and SMTP send-mail issues

Does your ISP at home allow SMTP user authentication? I know some ISPs block traffic on port 25, but some ISPs will allow authentication on alternate ports.
