    Problems with Safari

I might be a little behind the times, in earlier versions of the OS, Disk Utility couldn't repair permissions on the system drive. Did this change?

    Problems with Safari

You'll find Safari's cache in your father's home directory (denoted by the ~) Here is the path: ~/Library/Caches/Safari/ Inside you'll see lots of numbered folders. Just drag them to the trash and delete them. To repair the disk permissions, you need to boot off of the Mac OS...

    Login/Software Update

Disabling the AD service shouldn't affect your VPN login. I'd still speak with your net admin to see why they've configured your computer to use AD. The good news is, you can give it a try with no adverse affects (as long as you know the local admin username & password, but you'd have to know...

    Login/Software Update

That'll probably work, but if you don't disable it before getting off your work's network, you'll have to deal with the hanging until it's been disabled and then only local accounts will work. I guess what I was getting at (should have been clearer) is that you should find out why you need to...

    Problems with Safari

Try booting off of your installation CD and performing a permissions repair. I'd also remove the cached files for Safari.

    Login/Software Update

Basically, your computer is attempting to connect to an Active Directory server. It can't find the server when you're at home and this is why it is hanging. There's not a real easy way around this issue other than removing the AD authentication. Do you know why it has to connect to the AD...

Have you called your ISP to verify that AOL isn't blocking mail from their SMTP servers?

    Login/Software Update

Take a look under directory access (/Applications/Utilities/Directory Access). Under the authentication tab does it say anything other than /Netinfo/DefaultLocalNode ?

easy question from a PC user trying to help his Apple mate...

This doesn't rename the actual file. It adds metadata to the file so that spotlight can find it, but the actual file name doesn't change. If the person is using Apple Mail, Eudora, AOL, or Entourage (what no T-Bird?) they can set iPhoto to attach the photos into a new email using your...

The icon for Macintosh HD keeps moving to the bottom rt of the screen after reboot...

This is such an annoying feature, especially if you have multiple drives and don't keep the cleanest desktop. ;) Do you know if there is a way to pin mounted volumes down?

My photos disabled my mom's iPhoto permanently!

Just how large is her photo collection? I'd make a duplicate of the Photo library before messing with it any more (lost my grandma's email once, I always make duplicates since then ;)). You've deleted the preferences for iPhoto, but have you tried removing its cached files...

PC Tech needs help with G4

Also- If you plan on keeping the machine dual boot, I suggest setting up separate partitions for MOS9 and MOSX simply because you can option-boot your rig and quickly choose between them. Another thing I just thought of... (sorry lacking coffee this morning) If you have the install CD...

PC Tech needs help with G4

If it's booting to a command prompt, you should be able to bless the mos9 system folder. I think the command is something like: bless -folder9 "/path/to/mos9/System Folder/" You might need to use the -folder and -use9 flags as well. It's been a while since I've used it. You could try looking...

iPhoto is cr*p. Can I delete it?

Programs like iDVD and iMovie have tie ins to iPhoto's library/albums. Makes it easy when importing photos into projects. I can't speak for Final Cut Pro as I don't have that program. Deleting iPhoto shouldn't affect iDVD or iMovie though as I think they simply look at iPhoto's database.

    Virtual PC & windows xp

Have you set the permissions so that the VPC disk file is available to other users? I would imagine that you need at leat read and write access to it.

    cut files / rename files

I whole heartedly agree with this. Personally, I find the "cut" metaphor to be confusing. Sure, I know what it does, but if I hadn't been told what it did long ago, I'm not sure I would have figured it out on my own.

What sort of hardware is the corrupt system on? You could try to target boot it and copy them off that way.

    imac g5 kernal panic

Well, you're serial isn't in the range of machines with known power/video issues. But if after a clean install (ie reformat & reinstallation) the problem still persists I would take it to Apple to fix as the problem is probably hardware related. Since it sounds like he got the machine second...
