What programs are you running ? Is it a Xserve a machine that you've installed the Server software on? Have you tried removing some of the RAM on the Machine ? Which version of 10.x server are you running ?

Have you checked to see that you have the latest firmware update on the Firewire drive. As I had a very similar problem with an external Firewire drive with 10.4.x worked fine under 10.3.x After updating the firmware the machine hasn't locked up once : )
