Thanks for replying to my posts first. What i'm trying to do is switch users in the terminal, but when I do this it asks me for the cyrus password which I don't know. How can I change the password for cyrus? su allows you to switch users how is this different to login? Ta

If I type su cyrus it ask for my password it won't except my admin password, I have also tried typing cyrus for the password.

Yes you can do this. Start the iBook up holding down the T key on your keyboard this will put your ibook in Target Disk Mode ie a Firewire HD. Plug it into your iMac and you can now select it as your startup Disk.

With the help of a friend here is the answer. ping the address like this ping 192.168.0 this will then scan your network range but this doesn't seem to find everything.

Hi quick question I hope for someone out there, how do you ping a ip range in the terminal? I want to ping 192.168.1.1 to 254 via the terminal. Ta

If you open up your network in system prefereneces select Airport under Show: Now select the airport tab on the left next to TCP/IP You should now see By default, join change from automatic to A SPECIFIC NETWORK.

It sounds like the the mac's are using SMB ie no mac services running on the Windows server. If thats the case you will either need to turn on mac services or make sure the suffix is attached to the files that are saved to the windows server. Hope this helps

I have also tried using NetInfo to resolve the domain but this again works in os x but not in os 9. I have managed to resolve this by getting hold of a os 9 mac selecting the host file and then copying that system folder to the os x machine this works. Thanks for the suggestions.
