    One sure way to "confirm" would be to unmount and disconnect the external drive, if your system continues to run normally you'll know you were not booted from your clone.

    Providing your mini meets the hardware specs for ML, you can go to the Apple online Store and purchase SL 10.6. Once installed you can then download and install ML from the Apple App Store.

    If you actually have a working Recovery Partition then try starting up while pressing the Alt + R keys. This is a normal key combo for starting the recovery partition.

    thank you for the kind words. Odd you should mention "random bit of wood", because most of these pieces I originally acquired from 'firewood cutters'. They were more then glad to sell the wood to me for a token amount because as they put it, "it doesn't split worth a damn".

    My main hobby year around is woodturning as evidenced here. I enjoy fishing now and then, but I'm afraid that advancing age pretty much keeps me close to home these days.

    As DeltaMac mentions, it is important that the make and model of your NAS supports Apple Time Machine. If it claims to support TM then all I can suggest is you carefully read and follow their instructions as the method for doing the TM bit is different for each manufacturer.

    Sorry but I have to jump in here. I use both a Synology DS107e NAS and a LinkStation mini NAS (at different times) for Time Machine backups. Both work flawlessly I might add, and I back up 4 household Macs to these NAS drives. A picture is worth a thousand words... Synology TM support...
