True - but keep in mind that Puma, Panther and Cougar are the same animal only different names. Since we've already had both Puma and Panther.... you get the picture.

umm - sorry... yeah, Cheetah was the first (Mac OS X 10.0). Well that leaves us 4 'big cat' names left; > Ocelot > Serval > Lynx > Cougar Cougar's a great name - but in Australia it's a type of Bourbon! <http://www.fosters.com.au/spirits/brands/spirits/cougar_bourbon.asp> Judging...

True. But it was an obvious choice. Because what else is there. Weve already had Puma (OS X 10.1), Jaguar (OS X 10.2), Panther (OS X 10.3), and Tiger (OS X 10.4)... And now after Leopard (OS X 10.5) we are left with; > Cheetah > Ocelot > Serval > Lynx (my personal bet for OS X 10.6 -...

    ya'll gotta relax

Agreed. I can't understand why all of a sudden people are so worried about whether or not Windows will run on the up-coming Intel-Macs. I mean, come-on! We all know Windows is a buggy piece of crap. If ill-intentioned idiots want to want to run it on their new Intel-Macs - who cares! This...

Poor SCSI performance in OSX vs OS 9

Is this a Iomega MO 1.3Gb? Is it 25 or 50 pin SCSI? From what I understand MO drives generally used an Ultra SCSI interface with high-density 50-pin connector. This interface is capable of transferring data at up to 20Mb per second, but the Iomega 1.3Gb magneto-optical drive mechanism is...

There is only ONE Reason to buy a Macintosh

There is only ONE Reason to buy a Macintosh...? Actually, there is usually more than one. Ask people why they brought a Mac and the traditional responses have been; > For ease of use. > Better designed product (style) / quality hardware. > The Mac OS. (The look and feel of the Mac). >...

    Memory buying/installing Question

Memory question... I have a G4 Digital Audio (133MB s/bus) with 3 RAM slots. In most mac specs it states I can have a maximum of 1.5GB of RAM (-obviously using x3 512MB pieces). What I want to know is can I put a 1GB RAM stick in? And if I do, will it read it all? (or will it only read...

G4 CPU upgrade : fast single vs slow dual?

From my understanding of the G4 Digital Audio specs, the maximum amount of RAM each slot will recognise is 512MB. 3 slots X 512MB = 1.5GB. From what I've been told if I put a 1GB stick in there it will only recognise half of it, ie: 512MB. If anyone knows different. Please let me know...

G4 CPU upgrade : fast single vs slow dual?

However "bobw", I have a Digital Audio mac which like the Quicksilver models has 3 RAM slots (unlike the previous generation G4's that had 4) which can each hold a maximum of 512MB per slot. So 1.5GB is my phyiscal limitation - regardless.

G4 CPU upgrade : fast single vs slow dual?

WOW! "Lycander" you're a walking, talking book of knowledge, aren't you? Thank-u so much for explaining that one to me. I don't think anyone could have done a better job. Given the knowledge I've now acquired - I'm thinking I will pursue a faster single processor (long term). As it will...

How much does RAM actually help?

"ok so i just got my ram installed. holy sh#t. what a huge speed difference. that same image test i did above... now with 2.5gb of ram i did it in 3 seconds compared to 16 seconds with only the 512mb installed. " WOW! That is impressive. Although, what got me wasn't that a G5 with 2.5GB...

    graphics card question

Correct. There is no mac edition Radeon AGP 7000 cards (only PCI). However there are Powercolor branded Radeon AGP 7000 64MB cards available that have been flashed with the mac edition Radeon 7000 ROM - and these cards have earned a good reputation as a mac compatible card. (see Ebay). Don't...

    graphics card question

um... AGP - without a doubt. AGP is the newer technology. Like described above it has the ability to transfer data MUCH faster than any PCI slot. What you need to understand is that these days a graphics card is almost seen as a second processor. Using Apple's "Quartz Extreme" technology...

How much does RAM actually help?

Now... don't get me wrong - 640MB of RAM is a fairly decent amount. I think well accepted notions such as "go with as much as you can afford" stem from that fact that computers are generally sold/brought with a severe lack of RAM. And therefore the act of even doubling that amount can in...

Tiger vs Panther - hardware requirements

A 1.2Ghz G4 is a fairly powerful processor. But with only 256MB of RAM you are only giving it the bare minimum. Boost the RAM and you will feel/see a huge difference. Tiger will run slightly faster than Panther. Just as Panther runs faster than Jaguar.

How much does RAM actually help?

As stated above: "The simple rule is to get as much as you can afford." Even if you are not a power user, it only takes OS X and a couple of applications to easily fill up a GB or less of RAM. Just add it up. OS X needs a minimum of 256MB. An application like Photoshop requires 256MB -...

G4 CPU upgrade : fast single vs slow dual?

Hey, thank-u "Lycander". You touch on what I'm trying to understand... Having heard all these years the benefits of dual processing - is it true that the only real advantage is being able to mutitask effectively? To my knowledge, "Pengu" is correct as many of these applications have the...

G4 CPU upgrade : fast single vs slow dual?

Note - although this question is similar to the previous thread "processor upgrade", it differs slightly as it deals with how to max out a particular G4 model... I have a G4 Digital Audio (originally 466Mhz) that I have upgraded with care. My aim was always (and still is) to create the best...

    Adaptec Powerdomain 39160

... following up on my previous post and the ability to make a RAID volume the startup disk... Having done a little more research it seems apparent that using Carbon Copy Cloner (or a similar utility) is the best way get the OS X system files on to the RAID disk. Doesn't look like the Panther...

Hello bowb4cisco... That is excellent news! I'm glad you finally got things to work. Eventually I will get Tiger, but until I scape together enough scratch I can't afford it! - I don't have the same college price discounts as you cos i'm located in Australia! Please let me know what you...
