    Adaptec Powerdomain 39160

Hello bowb4cisco... I don't know if you are still continuing in your efforts to use the Adaptec 39160 card with your mac - but I thought I'd let you know that I just installed a second SCSI drive on my 39160 setup and experienced YOUR problem! After I installed the new SCSI drive, I lost...

Ram or CPU First? [G4 Sawtooth 350]

My last post was just responding to the previous comments on suitable drives for your system... However, in regards to the original question of what to upgrade - here are my suggestions (in order of priority): 1. Ram. At least to 768MB (x3 256MB modules). You have 4 RAM slots (each...

G4 Quicksilver 733 will not start after power outage

um... I hate to sound like an idiot... But I don't know what a "PMU" is? Seeing as I have a G4 I wouldn't mind knowing what to do if a similar "act of god" should happen to me.

    Mac Mini is almost interesting

The mac mini > IS < almost interesting. But remember - mac savvy people who visit sites such as this one are not really the intended target market. And therefore, suggestions such as "dual gigabit ethernet" are totally irrelevant. Sure, we all marvel at its price, features, and size...

Ram or CPU First? [G4 Sawtooth 350]

Yep... Generally speaking, most drives max out at about 30-45MB p/sec. You would notice a difference between the B+W G3 stock ata/33 and a PCI controller which should be ata/66 or higher - but remembering the max out - by not too much. I would recommend any of the fast, cheap 7200 ata drives...

    Totally uninspired by Tiger

I think I am slightly uninspired by Tiger... And the reason... I think I'm still in love with Panther! My entry into the mac world was 8.6. (Everyone told me how much better it was than OS 7...) But then I had a hard time under OS 9. For some it worked out - for me it was a struggle...

    Adaptec Powerdomain 39160

Sorry I couldn't help... It sounds like your Adaptec card just doesn't like the situation. If you still cannot install the second Panther disk because of the panics and prohibitory sign - you could try installing OS X 10.3 on the ide ATA drive - then using Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer the...

    Adaptec Powerdomain 39160

Okay... Lets be systematic about this: Firstly, I'd suggest to re-format the SCSI drive with a partial OS X 10.3 Panther on it. Because OS X has not been fully installed - it's buggered. Don't waste your time trying to fix it - (you will soon do a clean install...read on). >1. re-format...

    Adaptec Powerdomain 39160

Adding... BTW I'm running OS X 10.3 Panther. The above link is an "openfirmware" tweak that enables you to startup boot (mac OS X) from a SCSI drive attached to Adaptec cards in later G4 models. Hope this helps... mmmmmm.

    Adaptec Powerdomain 39160

Hey... I just might have the trick. First things first... I think it's a shame that the Mac has moved away from SCSI. SCSI was once what made Macs so special. It was (and still is in some cases) a great interface. Especially, not having that initial lag in responsiveness that you get with...
