Well if it powers up, why can't you put in the disc, it should accept it if you put in when it turns on. To me it sounds like a hard drive problem, due to the computer getting more and more sluggish. What type of drive is it, and was it new when you put it in?

I would have to agree with DJ, also because I'm guessing your other computer is running Mac OS X. By now there are so many compatibility issues between the two now, especially with the old wireless B AirPort. You would probably have to buy a separate Access Point or Router just to get it to...

All the updates seemed minuscule to me, and seems to be nothing visually different. I wonder the reason for the large size.

I generally use smcFanControl and raise the fan speeds a little bit above the default setting to keep my MacBook running cooler. Plus I can't really even tell a difference in noise.
