Drive filling with something -- what?

Hi All, Lately, after using my mac for a while, my hard drive will start to whirr incessantly and I can watch the free space on my drive slowly dwindle. Shutting down then restarting seems to fix it -- the drive space comes back and the whirring stops. If I was optimistic I'd guess that...

    Technology and Environmental Issues Thread

baldprof: Donating that CRT is great! But if you've got enough desktop real estate, why not throw an extra video card in your machine and get more screen real estate? (Although this is off my own topic

    Technology and Environmental Issues Thread

When I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand, I met an IBM exec in a bar. (They have offices in Bangkok.) He donated ten or so old PCs that I was able to create a computer lab with at the school I taught at. The machines weren't much -- old 386's I think -- but I wrote an English quiz game in...

    Technology and Environmental Issues Thread

Hi All, I thought it would be interesting to discuss environmental issues as they relate to technology. For instance, Disney is starting to rent "self-destructing" DVDs, http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=738&e=2&u=/nm/20030516/tc_nm/media_disney_dvds_dc which...

    What is a Mask? (photshop)

Mask Tips: The great thing about masks is that you can paint on black to block areas of the layer and white to reveal. Just keep one hand on the "x" key, and you can easily switch between black and white (or whatever foreground, background color you have chosen -- hit "d" for the default...

what state is Springfield in ? - the Simpsons hometown

I always guessed Massachusetts, because of the Mayor's accent. But of course, that's mostly just a connection between politics and the Kennedys.

Avoid or recover from hang when server no longer available

Hi All, Often I'll have a server (i.e. my desktop mac) mounted with filesharing on my powerbook (or vice versa.) If I go and do something boneheaded like put the powerbook to sleep, turn off airport etc. the powerbook will hang when I wake it up because it suddenly can't find the server...

Help: InDesign newbie with questions: pdfs, spot colors

Thanks JeffCGD, I'll probably invest in Acrobat 6 real soon. Though I'm still disappointed that I can't export to PDF with just the plates I select. Thanks again for your help!

Help: InDesign newbie with questions: pdfs, spot colors

Here's my scenario: I've put together a brochure with only one spot color (no black, just various tints of the one spot color.) For simplicity, let's call it PMS X. So InDesign assumes I'm using CMYK as well as the spot color, but I'm not. So when I output a PDF to send to the printer...

    Embarrassingly simple Finder question

Seems to me that if it made the new folder within the highlighted folder, then you wouldn't see the new folder unless the finder opened up the highlighted folder for you. And that would be quite disorienting.

    X-Men 2: Worth seeing?

It's uncommonly good. Definitely not to be missed. Despite it's 80% positive rating on rottentomatoes.com, some critics said the plot was silly. I thought it had quite a strong plot, with few holes, and a great story. The great f/x are icing on the cake.

    FAQ on Apple's X11 server

Thanks for the faq. I checked it out but don't know where to find a good list of UNIX apps to get started with. Anyone have any suggestions? What are the killer UNIX apps?

JeffCGD No, that option doesn't exist when I choose export to pdf. But thanks for your trapping warning :)

Help: InDesign newbie with questions: pdfs, spot colors

JeffCGD, Thanks for your response. I see in the Ink manager that my seps are preserved, but what if I want to output separate plates, rather than a composite? I want a pdf where I have a different page for each plate. Unlike when printing to postscript, in the ink manager there doesn't...

Help: InDesign newbie with questions: pdfs, spot colors

Hi All, I've made the move from Quark to InDesign2. I thought there was a way to output color seps as pdfs directly, but it seems as though when I choose export pdf, it only outputs a composite. Of course, I can print ps files, then distill, but this requires launching distiller under...

Linksys WPC11, Windows95 and Airport Extreme

Thanks again. :-) I should note to others reading this thread that this officially means that the Linksys WPC11 wireless card DOES work with an AEBS.

Linksys WPC11, Windows95 and Airport Extreme

rb2u, The PC remembers the hex, so I'm really just curious: why would the mac generate a different hex from the passphrase than the pc? I guess this gets into the realm of encryption that I know little about.

Linksys WPC11, Windows95 and Airport Extreme

rb2u: Worked! Again you're advice proves correct! And again I seek knowledge: The Linksys wireless config utility on the PC has the option for entering the WEP key as a passphrase (Create With Passphrase). So shouldn't this work, rather than my having to memorize the hex?

    Holy *&^%$#! That's one LOOONG password. I suppose that's because I've got 128-bit encryption?
