Permanently enabling "Check Spelling As You Type" in Safari?

Man, I can't believe I didn't even notice that feature yet! The spellchecker is one of my favorite features of OmniWeb (and about the only reason I keep it around any more, to be honest).

I can no longer add Applications...

Oops, sorry, the Repair Permissions feature was added to Disk Utility with the release of Jaguar. However, you can download a stand-alone version for OS X 10.1.5 from Apple's website.

Am I losing my mind?(Quite likely!)

LaunchBar is fantastic! It's a real Killer App, IMO. I use all the time, and couldn't get along without it now. :D

Where are the icons of the apps saved?

For Aqua applications at least, the icon is in [Application Package]/Contents/Resources, and is a file with the suffix .icns.

Other UNIX distro apps on MAC OS X?

Yes, you can run the GIMP on OS X. You will need to install an XWindows system, which can be done in a couple of ways. XDarwin gives you an easy-to-install binary. Fink, on the other hand, can give you immediate access to a multitude of *nix ports. Fink and other handy programs can be found...

What's the deal with page swapping?

A "page" is 4k of data. But when OS X has to "page out" (transfer data from RAM to the hard drive), it creates swapfiles of 80 MB. So you can fit a lot of pages into one swapfile! The fact that you're seeing more page-outs since running iPulse is a pretty good hint that iPulse has a memory...

No, the only effect this will have is to restore the correct display of your preference panels.

    HELP! I get a "sh-2.05" when booting!

That's the Jaguar prompt string. It basically means that you are in single-user mode. I don't know how you got there, but if you type in "exit" (minus the quotes) and then hit the return key, it should resume a normal boot-up.

Today...something happened to my prefs panel

It's a cache file that you need to trash: ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache Delete it and all should return to normal.

    ouchie...

"It keeps working," my gluteus maximus! I have a lot of friends who use PCs. Every one of them has at least one horror story about how trying to some simple task became a monster nightmare. None of my Mac using friends ever have those experiences. :D

    Enter the Dark Side!?

I got an email the other day from a friend who I consider a definite Windows "power user." She has an HP desktop, less than 1 year old, and runs XP Pro on it. Fast Pentium 4, lots of DDR RAM. She mentioned that her latest ftp session had failed because of pop-ups. Say what??? Turns out she...

Help, please help!! My mac is unusable!!

The main function of SystemUIServer is to display the menubar. Do you have any menu extras running? Try getting rid of them. Even turn off the menubar clock, if you have it running. See if things improve. If not, then my guess is that a reinstall is your only hope. :(

    10.2.2 Is Here!

With journaling turned on, I haven't noticed any performance hit. What I have noticed is an incredible speed-up in app launch time. I have the Dock set to show the pulsating triangles instead of the bouncing icons, and every app launches after one little triangle throb! Not even a complete...

    going nuts on me

Something to try - delete all the files in /System/Library/Caches, /Library/Caches and ~/Library/Caches, and then reboot. This can sometimes cure seemingly random app crashes.
