Real player for Mac OS X out!

I probably haven't been paying attention, but over at the Real website, they have a beta of the RealOne player for Mac OS X posted. Has this been out for a while, or am I actually one of the first people to know something?

Networking a 4400/200 to using Linux

I'm setting up a 4400/200 PowerMac to be an MP3 server. For some odd reason, it won't boot from the hard drive, even though files are accessible from it when I boot from a CD. What I thought I'd do is burn a Linux distro onto a CD and use that to boot the computer and serve MP3s from it...

iPod Firmware Update Confirmed by Apple - Coming Soon!

I'm thinking that iPod 1.2 will arrive August 5th. I acknowledge that as I write this, it will be the 5th for some people. But since I am on the West Coast, as is Apple... Um... Dammit, lost my train of thought again. Um... Yeah, I think it's gonna be really soon.

    Terminal Terminology Help, Please

Yay! It works! Thank you testuser! It's been a learning experience for all of us. :D The perl script sao provided wouldn't work with iTunes 3, since 3 added the Composer, My Rating, etc. fields. It wasn't until after I tried it that I figured that out. Thanks for listing it, though!

Sao, Thanks. Do you have a link?

    Terminal Terminology Help, Please

You'll have to forgive me; this script issue has been gnawing at my mind, and I may seem really eager. Maybe it's not a problem. ;) The problem with this new script is that now it splits up the album names, so that it looks like this:

    iPod Firmware 1.2?

This guy wrote about how he just got his 20GB iPod today (8/02/2002), and how the firmware was on the iPod *and* the CD. I'm guessing that other people have gotten their new iPods too, and would thus have the installation CD. :D Cool, isn't it?

    iPod Firmware 1.2?

I've heard that the installer for the iPod 1.2 firmwire update is on CDs coming with the new iPods. If anyone would be kind enough to post it on their website (preferably one which wouldn't die easily :D), that would be groovy. Does anyone know when it will be put on Apple's website?

    Terminal Terminology Help, Please

Hm... Where did testuser's post go? Anyway, his script (which I refered to in my last post) looked like this: #!/bin/sh for x in "`ls iTunes\ Music/`" do for y in "`ls $x`" do echo "$x - $y" done done

    Terminal Terminology Help, Please

ls still won't deal correctly with instances of 'x' with spaces in it. The script will start off with saying: It will end up echoing instances of 'x' with spaces in it correctly by themselves, it just won't look inside those folders and echo the album folders too. Example: I think...

    Terminal Terminology Help, Please

Your most recent script solved the album name issue, but the artist name issue is still there. Here's how it looks: I also solved my peeve with the 'Unknown Album' issue, by adding another sed to the 'echo $y' block; #!/bin/sh for x in `ls iTunes\ Music | sed 's/ /_/g'` do...

    Terminal Terminology Help, Please

With the new script, output looks like this: The script has no problem with albums, but when it replaces the spaces in the artist folder name with underscores and then tries to look *in* the folder with underscores in the name, there's no folder to be found.

    Terminal Terminology Help, Please

Okay, I tried it out, but the output is a little funky. Here's an example: With Artists and Albums which consist of single words, it works. Otherwise, it echoes each separate word. As you can see, this causes problems with the ls output. I made doubly sure to use the right quotes and...

    Terminal Terminology Help, Please

The general direction of what I was thinking of was something to the effect of (in English): For every album of every artist, print "Artist - Album" into a new file 'albumlist'. If the name of the Album is "Unknown Album", though, do not print "Artist - Album" into 'albumlist'. Sorry if...

    Terminal Terminology Help, Please

The many MP3s on my HD are organized in folders using the following scheme by iTunes: iTunes\ Music/artist/album/track What I want to do is, using the 'printf' command, create a file 'albumlist' which, obviously enough, is a list of all the albums on my HD. What I planned on doing was...

    Address Book and vcf's

Okay, I stumbled across <a href="http://www.apple.com/applescript/ipod/">this section</a> of Apple's web site which has AppleScripts to help. So, if anyone else wanted to know...

    Address Book and vcf's

I just got my iPod in the mail yesterday, and I am trying to work with the 'Contacts' feature; it sorts contacts by first name rather than last name; I would like it the other way around. Using the Terminal, I found that the field which determines the name of the contact in the 'Contacts' menu...

    Help with NetJuke?

I'm trying to install netjuke, a streaming MP3 server program, on my computer. Installing requires use of a couple PHP forms, and the actual installation is prompted by submitting a form through PHP. My problem is this: When I submit the information needed to start the installation, Apache...

    Suggestions for MP3 laptop?

Is there a way, though, that I can fit an older, cheaper PowerBook with an IDE drive and a FireWire port? I guess I could go for USB, but everyone knows how relatively slow that would be. Also, it wouldn't be for carrying around and listening to while I walk around as much as it would be more...
