    If you do not want to use the modem at all in the network prefernce pane, click on show, then choose "active network ports" in there you can uncheck the modem, and the computer will not use it

    I dont know about the new lcd iMacs, but the slot loading iMacs had no fan, it was one of the selling points... same with the cube...the powermacs have a fan (and a noisy one at that) the ibooks, and powerbooks have a fan but only run when needed.
