    setting up FTP server???

what macavenger said. some more detailed instructions: in the terminal, type cd /etc then sudo pico ftpchroot enter your admin password and then type in each username (the short login name, not the long one) that you want to be limited to their home directory. for example on my home...

    Need tips on optimizing Classic

in 10.0, turning off all the ATI extensions sped things up considerably.. eg, classic apps launched much faster and things seemed snappier. I dont know if this still has the same effect in 10.1, i havent had time to fool around with it yet.

    Can't telnet into 10.1

if you want to enable telnet, which is would NOT reccommend since its totally unsecure, just do a sudo pico /etc/inetd.conf and uncomment (take away the #) the line that begins with telnet (line 14 or so). you have to restart inetd by killing it, sudo kill -9 inetd, or restarting your...

If 10.1 performance sucks for you...

Yes, do a clean install. I have 4 partitions on my 40 gig drive.. one of them had 10.0.4. I upgraded that one to 10.1, and then on one of the others i did a clean install of 9.1, then upgraded that to 9.2.1, then installed 10.0, then the 10.1 update. The difference between the 2 is rather...

    10.1 not for gaming

Yah for more "intense" games such as quake 3... i'd have to agree. there's considerable lag for the controls and the framerates are considerably worse on my machine as compared to OS9. I have an imac dvse 400. It doesnt really matter to me though... Thats why I have a PC as well as a mac :)

    Mac OS X v. 10.1

Aren't there any local apple dealers where you live? YOu could save yourself 12 bucks by picking it up in your town/city, and have it a lot sooner. 130 bucks is a great price when compared to buying any flavor of Windows. win2000 is still 200 bucks new, I dont remembre what XP is but I think...

    Classic SUCKS BIG TIME!

It's quite easy. Open up system prefs, go to the Sharing pane, then click the Applicaton tab, and turn on "remote login". This enables sshd. You will then be able to login remotely from any computer using a secure shell program, supposing of course that your computer is on internet and you...

    Mac 10.1 vs Windows XP

This is much more of a "home user" feature than an at work feature. Think about it. A family of 3 has one iMac. Son, dad, mom. Each individual user has their own individual prefs. When they want to check their mail (they would more than likely be using mail.app), they cant just open up Mail and...

    Classic SUCKS BIG TIME!

I could switch to the terminal with the dock How did you switch to the dock if the front most app was frozen (and you say it was a full screen one)? I always have terminal open and would be able to get out of these situations, if i could get to it. But that's the problem. When an app like...

    Classic SUCKS BIG TIME!

hehe Eh, I dunno. MS's mac team is pretty good IMHO. I haven't had many problems at all with Explorer. Rarely crashes and has never taken down my system. Of course I've read plenty of posts from people who say this doesn happen to them. Who knows whats going on... The only times i've...

    MS Office 10 Beta5

If you guys are choosing to pirate software, that is totally your decision and I'm not the morality police or anything, but I don't think these boards should be used to help others find illegal versions of this software...

    Classic SUCKS BIG TIME!

So far classic has only crashed on me once, and I've had it open pretty much from the get-go. I'm not using it all the time but as I do web development, I need photoshop, and I also have a scanner that works flawlessly in classic. Photoshop has not given men any problems as of yet. Also from...

He's talking about putting the DOUBLE scroll arrows at BOTH ends of the scroll bar... this is not a GUI option... you can only have them on one end.

    Installing MySQL ???

Yah, jsut download the package installer from the link given above, and it becomes just another standard install. pretty cool. If you have no mysql experience, well, i dont really know any good places to start at. I learned the basics of it at my job a while back, it's really not too...

    Mac OS X 10.1: 5G64 or 5G68?!

Yes, what everyone else has said. This has been discussed to many times already, and since I have the official version of 10.1 in front of me, and it's build 5G64, I am of the feeling that 10.1 is 5G64, not 5G68. Who cares if that's what was shown at seybold, it's not what we have...

Is iDisk slow as molasses for everyone else too?

i dont know about that... it was quite fast for me on 10.0.4. I'm on cable modem though, maybe on 56k it's pretty slow,I have no idea. Anyway someone else started a thread about why the new idisk connect stuff (webdav) is bad. Apple's implementation sends your password in clear text over...

    iDisk security problem in 10.1

I know next to nothing about webdav, but either it's REALLY REALLY slow or apple's implementation is REALLY REALLY bad. iDisk is so slow it's nearly unusable in 10.1. After reading that article, I see that they switched from AFP to webdav. So, following the advice in that article, I went to...
