    "Broken Firewire Phy" in 10.1.3 + 10.1.4

If you boot into OS 9, can the System profiler see the firewire bus? If not, you may have a bad Firewire controller. Try booting from the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with your Mac, and run a full diagnostic.

    DNS Caching under OS 8/9

I may be completely wrong, but I believe the DNS cache is stored in memory. The expiration time should be the TTL (time to live) coming from the name server (Apple's developer docs don't have a whole lot to say on the issue). So, perhaps the TTL should be reduced on your DNS server. Of...

    About G4 processors

I believe G4s use BGA packaging, and can't really be socketed (this is why they are on daughtercards). So, it's not a simple matter of buying a new G4 chip and shoving it in the ZIF slot on the G3 motherboard.

    Norton's Utilities "greatest hits" ???

OK, here's a brief explanation of what you just did: "Single-user mode" is used for troubleshooting UNIX systems. It doesn't load a GUI, and loads a very minimal set of drivers, doesn't use Netinfo, etc. "fsck" is a command-line file system checking tool. The '-y' flag tells it to...

    Norton's Utilities "greatest hits" ???

I believe "kernel panics" are typically caused by hardware or hardware drivers. Do you get kernel panics with all of your periferals disconnected? Another suggestion for fixing disks: boot into single user mode (hold Command-S at startup), and at the prompt type "fsck -y". Keep doing this...

Printing from OSX to HP on XP

You may also want to take a look at this thread: http://www.macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14674 Not exactly the same situation you are in, but there is some good information there that could probably be applied to your setup.

    vpc and acceleration 3d cards

From the VPC FAQ ( http://www.connectix.com/downloadcenter/pdf/vpc5m_FAQ_dec01.pdf ): Q. Does Virtual PC 5.0 include 3D graphic support? A. To date, Connectix has not added 3D acceleration support because of the complex issues involved. There are many technical obstacles to providing 3D...

can I serve sftp but not ftp?

Extra88 was right. You don't need ftp turned on. Turning on ssh ("allow remote login" in the Sharing Preference pane) also turns on sftp. No need to diddle withh firewalls and whatnot.

    printing in the lan

LPR should work. I haven't tested this in XP, but it works in Win 2000 Pro. XP Pro has the same feature, I suspect that XP Home Edition does not. First off, you need a Postscript driver for the printer installed on the XP box. OS X can't do PCL, as far as I can tell (this may also explain...

    Are we returning to Wolfy?

They are probably just taking pre-orders at this point. The estimated ship time from Apple is 12 days. Maybe it will be officially released then? I certainly hope it is soon. I'm getting bored with Mulitiplayer Test 2.

    College Experience?

I went to Brown. It has a great CS program, is very easy to double major, is in the Northeast, and since it's an Ivy the reputation is good. And you don't have to take any bullshit classes. There is no core curriculum, which means the only required classes are the ones in your major(s)...

    Editing files remotely

If your Solaris box has it installed, you may want to try using the editor "pico", which is much simpler than vi or emacs (although not as powerful). It doesn't have a gui, but it's very easy yo use. If you've ever used pine, you can probably figure out pico. X11 is the windowin system used...

    where is Display Preferences

information about display resolution, refresh rate, etc. is in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist I don't have a mulit-head setup, but it's probably safe to assume that this information is in the same place. I've read on macintouch that is is safe to delete this file (i.e...

ibook needs hookup for non-DV camcorder..read

It can import a variety of audio formats, and still graphics formats, but for video I think it can only import a DV stream. Looks like they trying to sell more copies of Final Cut by limiting the feature set of iMovie. I suspect that all of the cheap-o USB capture devices probably produce a...
