    PCMCIA Cards not mounting?

I think it has to come from apple - my card requires no software or installation of any kind, just put in in there and it shows up (it is a smartmedia pc card) on the desktop in 8.6 ... it would be nice to be able to do that with OS X, maybe the final release...

    Thoughts on OS-X/UNIX/and MacOS

I am going on a tangent here but ... A control panel could probably be easily written in REALbasic that spits out the apache config file... You know, tabs at the top, radio buttons to turn things on or off, bla bla bla... I guess my thought is that if the demand is there, someone will step...

    A DNS resolution question

i found that to be true on mine as well. but on my solaris box it is an actual file so I got rid of the link on osx and made a real file /etc/resolv.conf ... before i did that, nslookup would not do anything - said it was using 0.0.0.0 for a host server, and i could not change it. after...

    Thoughts on OS-X/UNIX/and MacOS

also - regarding posts on these discussion boards: most, if not all of these users are Mac OSX/UNIX finatics; the beta testers, hackers, early adopters etc... I think that has a lot to do with the amount of posts sending people to the command line. If my mom was using OS X and she emailed a...

    Thoughts on OS-X/UNIX/and MacOS

I agree, it should not be there for most users. Maybe the final release of OS X will not even come with the Terminal program. This would ensure that the new users, even the mac veterans would not need to use any UNIX ever ... if they don't want to. however, I use command line daily - even...

    A DNS resolution question

oh, also - are you using 'nslookup'? that is the best way to check dns stuff. you can do one liners like 'nslookup blah' or you can enter the program with 'nslookup', you get a '>' prompt and can enter domain names to see how they are resolved, and it also returns the nameserver it is...

    A DNS resolution question

How to change the location of /Users?

I have not tried this but it should work... first option; GUI (probably need to log in as root): 1- drag the Users dir to the new location (it will be copied, then delete the old one) 2- then command option drag the directory from its new location to the original location to make an alias...

How do I change the name of locahost?

true - my hostname in /etc is the same as the dns name on our network (so when I type that name in a web browser on another computer I get my webserver). I chose to leave it out of my prompt though, since i thought 'osx' looked cooler (and is shorter!). prompt customization is fun.

How do I change the name of locahost?

you have to write a .profile script - it will let you customize everything about your prompt and environment, unfortunately you are using tcsh and I don't know how to write that but here is mine for zsh: <pre> Welcome to Darwin! osx:hotani:/Users/hotani> more .zshrc // this puts...

adding new user through shell terminal help

password should be the same: 'passwd someuser' adding users is quite different - there is no useradd, you have to use niutil. there is a good darwin faq that gives all the commands: http://darwinfo.org/faq.shtml here is a clip from that page: " How do I make a user under Darwin...

    web serving (apache and php)

(in homer voice...) mmmmmmmm - php - aaaaaahhhhhhh..... php does stuff that microsoft asp does, but cooler. and its not microsoft. and its free. and it has perlish syntax, with some javaish syntax as well. (another homer: mmmmmm, multiline comment.... ahhhhhh) it can do the simplest stuff...

    Apache

thats weird. are you viewing 'all processes' in the process viewer? in my process viewer, httpd is the name and www is the user, but it may be a different user for the default apache install. . . maybe you have to log out and back in again?

    Apache

no restart needed - it should show up in the processes as httpd. i start it from the command line with 'apachectl start' and stop it with 'apachectl stop'... of course this should not be necessary if you are using the stock apache - when you stopped it was it still in the processes? Maybe...

Disabling animated effects in OS X

actually this would be pretty good to know. Not just how to disable the minimize, but menu blinking - the first time I turned off menu blinking in 8.6 I could not believe how much faster the system FELT - even though it probably was not actually moving much faster, it seemed so much...

    Hmm...

ok, I thought it was for darwin at first since there is an intel version available. However, this is what shows up in the login window? If that is true then it rules out the darwin theory. . . and that means... ASSIMILATE THE INTEL BOXEN!!!!!
