    killing process in finder

OK, thanks for the key-combo trick. What is cmd-alt-esc? Didn't that mean something in 8.6? Now, as for rlogin, I am not sure what that is referring to. I was talking about ssh and it works. The question was, whether ssh, rlogin, telnet, or whatever, once I get a console prompt...

    killing process in finder

Hi, So I had this mounted drive on my desktop connected to a shared folder on Windows 2000 through smb. No problem. Until the person who owns that computer shuts it down and left with no warning. Nothing bad happens. Yet. Then when I clicked on finder in an attempt to shutdown and leave...

First AppleScript to use XML-RPC and Script Menu - Cool!

Oh no, it's not that, of course your apple script is way cool and I am using it with forte. Just that now I have to face learning Object-C and AppleScript and I much prefer to use what I already know to do cool stuff in MAC OS X, such as Perl and Java. I looked at Object-C and applescript...

First AppleScript to use XML-RPC and Script Menu - Cool!

Well, yes, I knew at least perl exist on OS X the day I got the tibook. But my question was really if I can do everything applescript can with perl. For example, earlier I posted questions about how to open Internet Explorer for a certain url. And someone gave me a oneline apple script that...

First AppleScript to use XML-RPC and Script Menu - Cool!

Where is this place where you said you found code on xml-rpc using apple script? On a side note, anyone know if other scripting languages can be used on apple to do everything apple script can do? Like perl or shell scripts? Sorry, just too lazy to learn yet another language.... G

    Anyone using JBuilder?

Hi y'all, I am hearing that some people positing on this forum are using JBuilder 4.0. But as far as I know, JBuilder 4.0 is not for Mac of any flavor. So how does anyone get JBuilder 4.0 to work on OS X? Hmm? Now I am using Forte, which seems more pure of java than JBuilder (my opinion, I...

    mounting shared folders on Win2000

OK, so from what I've gathered, the only way to connect to an NT machine from an OS X machine is through Sharity, and unlike a charity, Sharity isnt free, which means, there is no way to do this without taking out my credit card, yes? (No legal way, I mean). Sigh. G

    mounting shared folders on Win2000

That simple method you prescribed, smb://server/share, does that work with Windows NT too? Thanks, G

    can't get top to work

I bought my tibook (what's an icebook?) that came with OS X 10.0.4. I got my 10.1 update cd. What do you mean clean reinstall? With what? Reinstalling 10.0.4 and then update with 10.1 or is it actually possible to install 10.1 from the update cd? Or you are sayingI should _buy_ 10.1 full...

java and cocoa, exotic and rare drink mix

Hi, I tried last night to run that ToolBar java example that came with the Developer's tool and it gave me so many errors (looking for ProjectHeaders????). Anyway, two questions for the developers in Java and Object-C: 1. Even though Java implements the native Cocoa API, apps written in...

    mounting shared folders on Win2000

Hmm, the protocol is smb. Does this mean I need smb installed on OS X? Oh, I don't suppose W2k understands afp protocol, does it? Meaning, doing the reverse and have W2K mount a drive that points to my OS X. Thanks! G

    can't get top to work

Hi, On linux I can use "top" to tell me how much memory processes are stealing from my RAM. Well, using. When I typed "top" on the Terminal (OS 10.1) I get "Bus error". What is that? Chip incompatibility? Thanks, G

    mounting shared folders on Win2000

Hi, Is it possible for me to mount a drive on 10.1 that points to a shared folder on Windows 2000 professional? If so, can someone tell me or direct me somewhere that tells me what I need to do on the Windows2000 side and on the OS X 10.1 (NOT server) side? Thanks, G

java and cocoa, exotic and rare drink mix

Hi, I saw on Apple and on other apple propaganda that you can implement the Cocoa API with java. Yet I have failed to find any example on Apple site, and on the O'Reilly Cocoa book they use, sigh, Object-C (what's that???), the other language capable of implementing the API. Does anyone...

using just one monitor, thank you

Well, I don't have a usb keyboard. But, it shouldn't matter as this is the result I got. I closed the lid of my tibook and the computer goes to sleep! The monitor, natually, is all dark as a result. It's not smart enough to know that closing the lib meant I don't want to use the laptop...

using just one monitor, thank you

Hi, I am using a tibook with 10.1. I attached a Dell monitor to it and now I have stuff on the monitor and I can drag stuff to the laptop monitor. That was really cool for a while. But then I realize that I I don't use the laptop monitor very much at all. so the question is how do I not use...

    lies lies and lies

Yes, I do remember seeing somewhere that you need to install the 9.2 upgrade before 10.1. But isn't that sort of dumb? Normally people are like, wow, 10.1, waited all this time, let me install it. Wow, it's really fast, cool! Let me brag about it on macosx.com. Then a few days later, people...

brightness reset after returning from 9

Does anyone else have this problem? I have my brightness set to like 80% (as opposed to 100%). But when I boot into OS 9 and then boot back to X, that brightness is back to 100%, causing minor discomfort to my cones and rods in the eyes. Anyone has this problem and know how to fix it or at...
