This policy is quite resonable — if you could register after the warranty expired, anyone could buy AppleCare after an issue arose and would basically be covered under a three year warranty. Where do you live? Most European countries have a two year or longer warranty on such products by law.

Still, $199 is a great deal as there was no upgrade for the academic version previously. I just ordered a (full) upgrade for my own copy of FCP 4 :)

For some (capitalist) reason, Xpress and InDesign don't support Unicode fully. With InDesign, only the characters of the region you bought the program in works, and you'd have to buy a separate version to use e.g. Arabic. I don't know how that works with Xpress though. I'll suggest calling them.

Are you sure it's the timer that stops, rather than the application e.g. dropping the connection? You could test that by writing a message to the log on every iteration and see if it continues after an hour, when it stops sending messages. Have you tried to run the program for an hour on...

In fact, all of my own comparisations of MySQL, gcc and other programs show that my iMac Core Duo (1.83 GHz) is somewhat faster than my Developer Transition Kit (3.6 GHz Pentium 4 running Mac OS X), even with only one of the cores running.

You should've told the support reps a story about how important you are and how crucial your project deadline is, and you'd get a brand new Mac back in a week. AppleCare is a nice thing once you learn how to abuse them just like they abuse customers ;)
