you are missing the point that ftp is disabled for a reason. it is not a secure thing to do in general. passwords are sent in clear text and that comprimises your security. there are numerous ways to get around this, one of which you are obviously trying to do. another you might consider...

is it possible to connect to a server that doesn't accept ftp connection but does accept sftp ones? i'm using panther. i'd like to do it throught the "connect to server" option in finder.

actually, i just created a "new" account since i have an older one. it just occurred to me to do a check to see if user names were changable by some other means.

let's not jump to conclusions here. tab switching is still ideal for me vs expose-switching. there isn't as much visual overhead to simply switch tabs, and i'm sure it is easier on teh processor(s) too.
