You could be very right about the OS that shipped with the imacs and PM g3s, I never bought one when they were first out. I didn't get one until the OS 9 days so i went straight to that on those models. I might have been thinking about the USB Card Adapter Support 1.4.1 requiring OS 8.6 or...

USB was not enabled until OS 8.6 so don't expect any USB cards to work if you have to go back to OS 8.5 for some reason. Also, USB 2 was not supported until OS X so IF the card will operate as a USB 1.1 even though it is a USB 2 card you may have a chance.

Normally there is the 8 gig limit on the boot partition as previously mentioned but even though the machine will support X.3.9 I would still recommend to put in XPostFacto since as of v4 of XPF they have gotten around that 8 gig limit so you can have only one partition, which is very nice...

if you already have OS X Server then this doesn't matter, but the Xserve comes with the SERVER OS, unlike the G4 so that is another cost you may have to factor in to. just wanted to make sure that is known. the other thing too is that the Xserves are considerably louder then the PM G4s are...

i have heard that there are some problems installing on those with any video card other then the ATI rate 128 card that came stock. once installed you can put the better card back in though. I would also recommend to remove any other PCI cards just for the install as well.

I personally have had really good luck with OWC, but have never found a good deal on crucial. maybe it is my timing of when i needs chips and when they have good pricing, but crucial was always more expensive when i looked at them.

If you do get a retail version of panther for that machine, keep this in mind. The boot partition for X has to be 8 gig or smaller and also reside on the first partition of the master drive on the IDE chain. I think that XPF has now made it possible to not be restricted to an 8 gig partition...
