Started using fan controller about a year ago.Just replaced both my cooling fans (1st gen.MBP).I would not use it full time like I did,just when you need it.I've been using a 3 fan laptop cooler and that seems to work better for me.

The OP expressed a dislike for FireFox,that's why I suggested Camino.Official support for PPC is supposed to end with 4.0.I have never been satisfied with FireFox on PPC,Safari and Camino seem to me to run much better on older machines.

I was thinking more along the lines of the 4.0 beta.

Fire Fox has dropped PPC suport on its newest version.However the Camino browser is a good substitute and is still has support for PPC.

A new replacement drive runs in the $90 dollar range plus installation.Another alternative would be to buy a external drive and use that.Once again,price is in the $70>$100 dollar range.

Sounds like the optical drive is going bad.Test it with a known good dvd or cd.Also you might want to blow a little dust-off inside the drive thru thru front slot.My MBP is the same age as yours and I'm ready for my 3rd replacement drive.
