    Apple just doesn't get it.

They announce the baddest computers on the planet yet price them out of most peoples reach. $1999 for entry level? Come on Steve, this isn't 1997. Have you looked at the price of PC's? You've got to stay competitive. Here's what I suggest: iMac == $999 - $1499 1.6ghz G5 == $1499 1.8ghz...

Performance difference between retail Jaguar and pre-installed?

I'm running an iBook G3 700mhz. I installed the retail version of Jaguar on it without the OS 9 support. My mom just bought an iMac 1Ghz and maxed out the memory. Her system doesn' feel any faster than mine. Could it have something to do with Jaguar being pre-installed? I noticed that OS 9...

    MSNBC review of iTunes Store

The guy was right on the money about the quality of the music. I don't care whether you like AAC, MP3, or Ogg Vorbis, none of them match the quality of a CD. I also agree with the author in that why spend $9.99 for the album if you can purchase the CD for almost the same price? I burned all...

iTunes: burn without space between tracks: possible ?

Sounds to me like you'll need to do some sound editing before you burn your cd's.

    OS X--incredibly slow

Please don't compare OS 9 with OS X. It would be like putting Windows 3.1 on a Pentium 4 machine and then comparing its performance with Windows XP. Of course OS 9 is faster. There's less stuff working in it. OS X rocks. I come from a UNIX/Linux environment, so I never was a fan of OS 9 or...

    PowerPC 970 Info Thread

Even if the the 970 is shipped this fall in new Power Macs, the real question is whether anyone will be able to afford it. Knowing Apples track record, I'd be surprised if you could get one for under $3000.

    iPod 2 Speculation

Dude, $529? I think the 20GB is too expensive now and you want to raise the price? It should be $199, $299, and $399.

    .wma...mp3?

WMA is controlled by Microsoft. MP3 is controlled and licensed by the Frauhofer Institute. They license their technology to companies who make mp3 players and encoders. Apple pays them a royalty for every copy of iTunes. Ogg Vorbis is an open source, open format with no software licensing...

    Think Different....AGAIN...

I was a kid in the 70's as well. Before the days of video games. Well, Pong was out. But I didn't get an Atari until around 1980. Get this, you young'ens. We used to play outside all day during the summer. We'd pack our lunches and actually go play baseball for hours at a time. Or at least it...

    X11 beta version 0.2

Plenty of KDE and Gnome apps. Pan is a great newsreader. Abiword is a pretty decent word processor. OpenOffice, Gimp, Nedit, gnumeric, evolution, gftp. There are equivalent OS X apps to these, but the OS X are for the most part not free. The biggest reason to run X is for its remote...

    Running multiple copies of Mail?

You can always have her check her mail account via the web if your isp has webmail. My wife does this with my laptop all the time.

    Happy Birthday to the Macintosh

Is it online anywhere? Can I download it?

    Why the 12" PB bashing!?!

I don't bash it. But Apple should call it a iBook not a PowerBook. It would have been nice to have all the features of the 17".

    Mozilla without Mail?

On my Debian Linux system, you can either install Mozilla (browser, mail, chat) or mozilla-browser (browser only). So its a matter of packaging. Someone needs to grab the source and package only the browser.

How much space to import 4 hrs of DV for use in iMovie?

I just imported an episode of Seinfeld from my video camera. I believe it used about 4 gigs of space. Thats a lot of space on my iBook with its 20GB hard drive. I know I only want to work with one project at a time because of this.

    Safari lacks. Doesn't have tabs.

Sorry if it wants to be like IE, then I want no part of it. I'll keep Chimera and Mozilla. I actually think its slower than Chimera and Mozilla too.

Apple sightings on TV and movies?

One of the episodes of The Sopranos this season had Janice doing instant messaging with Bobby's kid. She was on an older PowerBook. But when they showed a screenshot, it was in Windows.

    .Mac down again?

Yeah, this is definitely not worth the $49 I paid. I don't think Apple will see my money next year when its time to renew. This happens all too frequently for me.
