    Harddrive crash

Make sure the XP machine starts WINDOWS in stead of MAC OS. Also XP might have a problem with HFS format, which might cause it to crash to. Finally the drive has crashed so severly that it crashed the system when detected. Try to find someone with a mac and check if he can access the...

Mail hung up on large message

The message might be generated by your provider. These will be generated by then for a couple of days and then stop. Check the content of the message to see the reason why it was not delivered. Tis should give you a clue on why things keep failing. Good luck, Kees

    Drive wont mount!

Not likely as he already has a 200gb drive. Try setting it next to the CD/DVD drive. Sometimes drives do not like it to be together on a cable. This can happen between any brands and even with the same brand. If you do so, make sure the harddrive is master (and let the CD/DVD not connected...

Can't empty trash when external drive is attached

If you are up to it, you can also use the TERMINAL to delete files. This is a bit more dangerous, but very effective and will TRASH any file there is to be trashed, whatever the permissions are (if you make yourself root user). If you want a description, we can give it. Good luck, Kees

    10.4 DNS Resolutions Woes

The extra point is normal, it is the separator between the domain-name (.) and the device name. You could try a space in the search filed, but it is better to specify a domain name (maybe the router name). Good luck, kees

Need to change the IP address on my Airport Base Station

As DHCP usual gives out the same IP-number to the same modem, it is best to take the modem offline for a longer time as a few minutes e.g. overnight. Several hours should do the trick most of the time. Most likely your IP-number has than been assigned to someone else and you get a different one...

Desperately seeking fast networking for InDesign workgroup

My remark was not intented as anything else as to make sure that the requester checked that his network is really up to max speed for its connection. And this ofcourse also includes the cabling as some else mentioned. The time used to transfer data between the systems is decreased by about 10...

Desperately seeking fast networking for InDesign workgroup

But remember that a batterij being on power continuously will degrade very rapidly and might provide backup power for a short time. But a short time might be enough to cover small power failures. But a laptop is certainly not made for this purpose and heating might become an issue in time...

    Leopard Server upgrade needed?

A test machine is ofcourse very advisable, but AD should be machine and OS indepent, so you should not encounter a problem, but as with software you never know until you tried it. Have you already checked if the required applications run under LEOPARD. Also what do you want to gain by...

MacBook Pro: Selecting and installing cheaper RAM

Yes. Ask which brand they have and try to match them against 'garanteed' brands from other (web)shops. If the same brand, you are reasonable oke to buy. Also ask them if they garantee proper function for your mac. Good luck, Kees

Desperately seeking fast networking for InDesign workgroup

Also check what connection speed the MAC's (not mentioned) have as it is nice to have a gigabit switch, but if connections are 100mbit, you leave 90% speed unused. At least the SERVER should be gigabit to begin with. Good luck, Kees

    10.4 DNS Resolutions Woes

Normally even your internal network has some kind of domainname. If you do not add one, dns will have problem resolving the name. You can have a fixed domainname added to all missing by filling in the 'search domain' to whatever it should be like localdomain.com -> mypc = mypc.ocaldomain.com...

What is this "LED" screen in the new Macbook Pro?

How long does a 500gb backup to internet takes and which provider will give you that much space. For that amounts of data they have developped TAPE streamers, DVD / CD are for smaller backups only. If you feel good by only 1 backup, come into my shop and talk on a weekly base to all the...

MacBook Pro: Selecting and installing cheaper RAM

Although i am not sure what goes into the notebooks exactly, in general laptops now use ddr-667 memory, which are reasonable priced (at least compared to the 486 memory pricing). I am not know with the available memory brands, but the most important is the brand of memory chips. Big names use...

    Faster Connection: AT&T Vs. T-Mobile

Performance is partly depending on the distance between your house and the phone centre 9for adsl ofcourse). If they offer 20mbit, you may get that at close distance (less than 1 km, but at 2 km distance, it might drop to e.g. 10mbit or less. Speed is usual the same for all providers , but...

Can anyone help did a search and nothing?!!

You did very well. You had the chance to save the data and ignored it. The cd player might be dead. Try the original OS installation disc that came with the mac. If that will not boot also, you are in deep trouble. Normally i do not have high hopes on it, but clearing the battery (pram)...

Best way to decide on what to delete?

Mount makes a harddrive available to the OS. Unmount disconnects a harddrive from the OS (no longer availbale). A disk image is a file containing the contents of a disk (also named a volume). It is simply a file containing everything that is on a partition of a harddrive (a harddrive contain...

HDD S.M.A.R.T Status / Crash Questions

Also if the data is very important, do not try to recover your self as you might actually make it impossible to make a recovery. Of course make MULTIPLE backups (and not only to another harddrive or memory-stick, but also on tape or cd/dvd) to reduce data-loss to a minimum. Good luck, Kees
