Most of us have been burned numerous times by Norton. Apple's disk utility only scratches the surface and fails to repair many problems. Instead of trying to repair, disk warrior rebuilds. The rebuild process optimizes as well. Geesh I sound like a commercial.

Deleting a mounted DMG is a two step process. You have to eject the mounted volume (cmd E) and delete the .dmg file. Its a pain. Is it me or do other people instinctually pronounce .dmg as "a dot damage file".

The disk warior CD is OS9 bootable. It has a copy on the CD. I also keep a bare bones copy of OS 9 and disk warrior right on the iPod for emergencies. No Mac user should be without disk warrior.

If the item is in the doc, it must exist somewhere as a file. The text that appears over the icon in the Doc will be the file name. You can do a search for that file. What version of the OS are you running? I haven't seen that icon for a while.

I have had the QT player and others refuse to go away. No command or amount of time (several days) made it go away. Logout would be timed out. There appears to be times the parent process just outright neglects to check up on its children. Is there a child services department we can call? :-)

Control click the Doc's icon and choose reveal in Finder. Select the file's icon and File->Get Info Click the icon in the info pane (should become selected) and Edit->copy. Select any other icon in a similar fashion and Edit->paste.

Are you saying that two directories with the same name exist in the same location? That should be impossible. Did your user directory get renamed with an unprintable character or a space at the end? The OS will recreate a user's home and Library directories if not found. The Library folder...
