    Ethernet slow one way?

From what i have read in others posts, this is a known problem with 333 imacs running osx. Sure enough when i rebooted the machine into os9 100 full duplex ran just fine. No erros and full speed in both direction. I know the machine is in full duplex 100 because the lights on my switch say it...

    Forcing 10/full duplex

Tried that one and it was not accpeted. the iMac uses a bmac ethernet chip, not a gmac chip. it uses a differnet set of commands it seems.

    Ethernet slow one way?

Unfortunately for me I have no way to force my switch. I am using a Linksys BEFSR41 Router and it does not have any provision I am aware of to control its speed or connection protocols. I guess my only recourse is to take the iMac back down to OS 9. A real bummer since managing one OS in my...

    Ethernet slow one way?

Well I think I have traced the problem. After redoing the cables and not having any improvement I decided to bring the machine downstairs and hook it up with a known crossover cable directly to my main G4. The problem is still there. So its not the router or the cabling going thru the house...

    Ethernet slow one way?

All still set to 100/full duplex. I came up with a solution if it is the cable. Since there are two unused pairs in the Cat5 cable I am going to remake the connectors and use another pair.

    Ethernet slow one way?

I have eliminated the router from the equation. I hooked the imac cable directly to the G4 and still had the same problem. I used a crossover cable in between by the way.

    Ethernet slow one way?

I ran ifconfig and it said it was in full duplex/100. The router also says full duples/100. The cable tester said the cable was fine. So it may be the NIC. Just to confirm though i am going to make up a new cable and just run it through the house on the floor and see what happens. Either way...

    Ethernet slow one way?

I ran a test on the cable. I have a very comprhensive cable tester made by Microtest, called a Pentascanner. It reports that all of the lines are fine and there are no problems with the cat5 in any way. Swapping out would be hard too. it is a 82 foot run through the walls of the house.

    Ethernet slow one way?

Yes, when I try to send the file from the imac to the other machines I get a very high number of retransmitted packets. But when I put the files onto the imac i do not get that problem. I am connecting using file sharing. Appletalk is turned off. I also tried using FTP and while it was...

    Ethernet slow one way?

I have three Macs connected together using a linksys router. Mac 1 and Mac 2 talk to each other just fine and exchange files at about 82Mbps. But Mac 3 has an issue. It is an older 333iMac. When I send files to it I get a consistent 62Mbps, which is fine considering the 5400RPM drive and 66Mhz...

Printer sharing between X and 9

Well that did work. Its a bit kludgy to have to turn on Classic whenever I want the machine running OS 9 to print but at least it works. Now all we need is some unix geek to come up with a way for X to see shared printers on OS 9. Anyone? Thanks, Zax

Printer sharing between X and 9

I have three macs setup through a Linksys router. Two of the machines run OS X, one runs OS 9 (and has to stay on 9). I have one printer to share. Is there anyway to let the machine running 9 share the printer that the machines running X use. Thanks, Zax

    Editing MTU settings

Some time ago someone posted how to use PICO to make permanent changes to various TCP settings. It involved modifying a file in the /etc folder. I lost the info and could really use it again. I want to change my TCP recv window, the state of RFC1323 and a couple of other things. Can anyone...

    Which Video Card to use

I am in the process of handing over my old G4 400 AGP to my 12 year old son to use. He mostly plays games. The machine has the original AGP 2x ATI card in it, but I also own a ATI 128 VR card that I have not used in a couple years. Which card is the better one to use in the machine for his...
