Time Machine - finding a network drive

You did in a way but ... (sorry if i'm harsh - no harm intended) Honestly, if the drive is on a server ... it does not have legs ... so there is no logic in walking it to the mac (or the mac to it) for an "activation" connection. And for the speed issue, why the concern on how long the...

Time Machine - finding a network drive

(I'm pulling this thread out of the original thread to avoid confusion) I have my disks on a separate Mac. My plan was to use these (via airport) to do the backups. Unfortunately the "network" SHARED disks do not appear in TimeMachine. Anyone know if this is a limitation of Leopard?

    Time machine hints

But if the drive appears in the finder window under "shared" is this not sufficient?

    Preorder Leopard From Apple Store

Leopard has arrived in Switzerland. However the carrier, TNT, has been caught unprepared and is unable to manage the flow of deliveries. In their great wisdom they marked all customers as "out for holidays" - which is not true of course.

    Word Processors for Mac!

But I am cool. I was emitting a warning and my comments. Only a lot of openware fans considered this negatively and reacted with long paragraphs of text. So here is my long text. I agree totally with "That fault is of the user, not the software". Absolutely right. However, openware...

    .app files

I tried this by renaming the file in terminal using unix and checking the results in the finder. I took X.jpg (appears as X.jpg in finder) and named it X.app (it appears as X in finder), then renamed it X.jpg.app (it appears as X.jpg.app in Finder). I am using a normal picture "file", you...

    .app files

Sorry, fryke, don't understand you. If I name a file XXX.jpg.app on my mac running 10.4.10 the file will show full extensions (ie. XXX.jpg.app). If I name it XXX.app only the XXX appears. So I fail to see the security issue you raise. I was just proposing an idea, as compared to previous posts...

Which external Ethernet HDD should I buy?

Thanks fryke, you somewhat confirm what I was told. If you extensively use you machine, the timemachine backup can be bigger than the original (full+weekly+6*daily+23*hour). I think attention should be given to choosing the right size for the backup disk.

    Word Processors for Mac!

The macrumors site indicates that in Leopard textEdit supports OpenDocument and Word 2007 formats and a "Grammar check". Maybe all you have to buy is Leopard ? ;)

Which external Ethernet HDD should I buy?

Fully agree, I have had echos (I believe reliable) that timemachine uses up backup hard disk very quickly. If you plan to use timemachine, wait and see what the requirements for the external drive are so that you buy the right size disk. Only 6 days left.

    .app files

I may be S****, but unless you have set the finder to show .app extensions they should not be visible. So if mikecolly has not set this in the finder, there may be something strange about there being a .app extension. Have you set the finder to show the .app extensions (in...

Well back about iMovie 08. I have moved ahead and I have it running on my G4 :p. Don't applaud the hack is not mine, but here it is... 1. Open the package contents and digging deep you will find the iMovie package. Just double click it and it will install. 2. Find yourself a hex editor...

    Word Processors for Mac!

I was only emitting a warning, not a reason not to go open-source. Don't missunderstand me. How many times have I received unreadable "open source" documents, upon asking the sender how I could read them the only answer I really got was "just install the software it's free". Sorry, my Mac...

    Word Processors for Mac!

In education you will likely exchange files frequently. So having a word processor that can write files that others can read is very important. So don't minimise the conversion issue, and make sure whatever you choose will be readable by everyone. If you opt for freeware, you are - somehow -...

    Very strange OSX sleeping/awake issue

I have this also, and had me into sever concerns as to why.. In my case I tracked the issue to one of the following: 1. Setting in Preferences/Energy Saver/Schedule/Startup or wake. If these are set and the iMac is on, it will activate the screen of the iMac in sleep mode. Similarly, my backup...
