It is a Stuffit archive. Used to be the most common file compression used on Macs, like a zip but for the Mac basically. But can also be decompressed under Windows with the Stuffit Expander (free).

    Website Design

For the most part anything you can get on Windows is probably available for the Mac... like Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, Dreamweaver, GoLive, etc. Some of the smaller shareware/free tools aren't cross platform but most likely there is an equiv of that for each platform. But, like any...

    best ftp app?

I have used/owned Transmit since it was released and swear by it. When I am doing a site, and have to use the built-in Dreamweaver FTP I am always reminded how much I love Transmit.

    Background noise removal software

I use Audacity (free for Mac/WIn) for that and it works decently. And it's pretty easy to use the Noise Removal plugin. Keep in mind that you can only filter out so much of the background noise before the voices you want to keep start sounding wierd. I have used it to clean up poor quality...

    Mac OS 8.2 Beta

I miss the old free versoins of the Mac OS. There was something cool about going down to your local Apple dealer with a handful of floppies, getting a copy right there and going home to install it. I was amazed when they introduced the multifinder. Before that, DAs were the only way to do...

    Podcasting - who cares?

I just wish people would stop calling them podcasts. They are not being broadcast by an ipod. They are being listened to on an ipod, and many times, not even an ipod is playing them. For them to be truly podcasts, you would have broadcast them from your ipod to somewhere else, such as with a...

    New Mac mini

I seriously doubt that it's a intel mini. Apple has said that the first Intel machines will not appear for almost 2 years. Besides, the chances are, its just for a new rev of the mini, maybe with more ram or similar. That's all.

I want to connect to a networked drive at startup

My mounts come up as the volume's name like "Happy Goat" or "Finger Biter" or whatever. Are these seperate drives with seperate volumes or one drive with several volumes? Yes, cfleck. However I have no idea how to AS into the Keychain. I've read that there are issues with Keychain Scripting...

I want to connect to a networked drive at startup

Here is the basic script. There is no error checking to see if the networked machine is there or not, so it will fail if that is the case. If someone who is AS saavy could add that, I'd appreciate it. tell application "Finder" mount volume "afp://machinename/volumename" as user name...

Did your favorite magazine fail to detail Tiger correctly?

I stopped giving the magazines (printed ones) any credit for anything long ago. They are always late to the party, and usually are less than thorough. In the meantime, we can easily find what we want immediately online and its almost always more accurate as they correct edit etc. Given the...

New to the world of mac. I have a few questions.

On the towers, if you don't have a 2nd CD/DVD/Zip/Jaz internal, you can also put a HD up there on the shelf they fit on. I have 3 HDs in my G4/466 this way.

    iTunes Visualizer needs work

In comparison to WinAmp's visualization selection, iTunes is like a desert. There are a few nice ones, but most of them are similar to visuals that WinAmp had 5+ years ago. But, honestly, how often does the avg user really need them? If I am listenign to music, iTunes is minimized and I am...

    Ram Question....

More RAM is always better. The way that OS X works, if you have 256 or less, you are working almost always from Virtual Memory, which makes things slow. I recommend at the very min 512 for anyone, even basic users. It gives a nice performance boost when using the machine. But you would be...

Help! I want to create text based RPG game

Well, first you will need to come up with the game idea. Decide what the game is going ot be about is the hardest part. And there are many many things to be considered as you write it. Coming up with a map of points you will go to and from helps. With each point you detail out what is there...

    Superdrive upgrade for Macmini

The K04 is excellent for the Mini and very affordable if you install it yourself. My only gripe with it is the noise it makes sometimes when I boot up. Aside from that, it was only a few greenbacks more than the Apple option, faster, and does Dual Layer.

I want to connect to a networked drive at startup

I use an AppleScript to mount my network drives because they aren't always there... I keep the server off unless IN eed it due to its noise. The script is very simple and does the trick quickly and easily.

    TV Mac

Unfortunately even with SVideo, the picture on text and such isnt the best on a TV. But thru a RF adaptor its going to be pretty awful, then again ANYTHING on a TV from any source thru RF is awful. Sure is nice for playing movies to the tv tho. I used to play marathon on my TV sitting on my...
