Go to the Mail prefs, to Accounts. Click on the Edit button for each account, and in the edit window, click on Special Folders. There you will see a drop-down menu giving options for erasing messages in the junk mail folder.

I suspect that these Temporary Items folder are being created by some 3rd-party software, rather than by the system. Perhaps by LimeWire or something similar? Just a guess on my part.

Those permissions are the same as for anything that requires admin authentication. "Any user" can't do squat, as per the "r-x" in the third permission area. Sure, there are security issues with OS X, but primarily only if you have physical access to the machine (unlike Windows).

My partition with the OS on it is the only place I don't get one. It's on my other 2 HD partitions, shown as owned by my_user_name:staff, with rwxrwxrwx permissions. Same owner on my FireWire external drive, but the permissions there are rwxr-xr-x. Very strange... :confused:

Are you able to create a new user? If so, create a new administrator account. You could then try to change the ownership of your old user's files (either in the Terminal, or using a utility like XRay or BatChmod) so you can use them in the new account.

I have no idea if this will help, but you could try booting up in 9.2 and then using Drive Setup to initialize the other 2 partitions. Can't hurt, anyway.

MacFreak, my machine is very much like yours. Takes me about half a second to open a folder. And in column view, you don't need to open the sucker. Time for some maintenance on your machine, methinks. ;)

I actually use both. I use Entourage if I'm sending attachments, and the calendar is top-notch. But Mail's new spam filter in the Jaguar version is much better than Entourage's cumbersome spam handling. So any accounts that I use to sign up for stuff on line and the like are now handled by Mail.

IIRC, the G3 iMacs were announced to be EOL back in 2001. But there was so much uproar that Apple kept producing the 2 current models. They'll probably discontinue them for good in the next few months.

If you back up the /Users directory, you will have the vast majority of "critical" files. That's where the Explorer bookmarks are kept. Of course, if you've added stuff like startup items to /Library, you should back them up as well.

Interesting. I have 768MB of RAM in my CRT iMac, all purchased from coastmemory.com because they had the lowest prices I could find anywhere. It's worked perfectly, even back during that infamous RAM-destroying firmwear update in 2000. :D

TinkerTool cannot change screen capture format in Jaguar. However, what you can do is open the .pdf file in Preview, and then choose Export from the File menu. You then will have a choice of formats to export as, including .jpg.
