OS X :: how secure art thou?

While the work-load is more, it doesn't make it impossible. While I have had my share of issues with Windows Update and the like, the fact that the fix was available for months (and in a couple of cases, over a year), is just silly. Hmm, I can think of plenty of apps/etc that help prevent...

    OSX.x isn't that good (?) - vm, cache etc...

You will never reclaim VM swapfiles. The OS manages this, and prevents ANYONE from touching them (even root). When they aren't needed, they are deleted off the disk automatically. The reason for this is the swapfile stores a copy of a program's RAM state (when it isn't being used by the...

OS X :: how secure art thou?

This is the key... keep your platform up-to-date. Look at the number of large worms over the past year for Windows. How long was a patch available to fix the vulnerability before the worm hit? 1-3 months on average. Those are some LAZY admins. I would say that MacOS X is as vulnerable as...

OS X :: how secure art thou?

The funny thing is that first quote... If I make a Windows-compatible OS, I am bound to be vulnerable to Windows-compatible exploits. It is just the nature of the business. However, I would like to note the Unix-based exploits require access to at least a user account, and some sort of weakness...

    Beatles suing Apple

Hmm, I don't think Apple would have gone into this (especially with SJ at the helm) without knowing what they were doing... plus I would hardly call Apple Computer in the SAME market as Apple Records. Apple Records is a record label that handles artists and the rights to created music while...

    Creating .zip files in Panther

Unfortunately, no. 10.3's zip files only work on 10.3 systems when you archive something with a resource fork (like a Carbon app designed to run on 9). However, if you are archiving data files that are designed to work on both Mac and PC systems, you can use it with no problems. Rule of thumb...

    Piracy ‘could kill Mac-gaming’

I could easily name a couple people. The problem being, how many people who participate in such activity are likely to hang out here talking about their piracy? Taking a sample of a group like this is not going to do anything but prove your point. There is a reason why piracy rings/etc are...

    Piracy ‘could kill Mac-gaming’

The article is talking about the porters like Aspyr and MacSoft, not about the industry in general. In this respect, I would happen to side with the porters on this, because if I port a product to the Mac that someone else wrote, I am already on leaner margins because of the licensing fees...

iTunes - Pepsi is a FARCE, a LIE, and a SHAME

The problem with this is the amount of time it would take to stare at the code, twist the bottle to make out the full code... and memorize or write it down. While it is possible, the amount of effort to do so is not worth it. I would rather pay the 99 cents (our local soda price) for a song and...

iTunes - Pepsi is a FARCE, a LIE, and a SHAME

Well, we started getting the goods about 3 weeks into Feb south of Seattle, WA... finally started seeing Sierra Mist bottles today... and I hate Pepsi and prefer Sierra Mist.

    need help with my 9600/300

Also, if you don't want to get an additional card and only want to add a few extra GB of HD space, you can look at SCSI 20GB drives, and those will work without extra hardware. Or, if your Firewire card has an internal port, you can hook up an firewire/ATA bridge inside your case and use it that...

    need help with my 9600/300

The firewire card has to be OHCI-compliant to work. A fair number of cards will work, while a fair number will not. I was surprised to see a CompUSA-branded card be OHCI-compliant with no information on the outside of the box. Look in the manual that came with the card, you should be able to...

    Galactica: AD

Whoops, should have provided that... used to forums where they prohibit linking to sites of a commercial nature. http://www.vendornation.com/*ws4d-db-query-QuickShow?ga003 This is the official page for the game, it is a simple variation on the whole galactic empire game with some decent...

    Galactica: AD

I just pulled this game back up because I was in the mood for some MoO/Spaceward Ho gaming... and found out how easy and smooth you can serve multiplayer games for this one. Low bandwidth, adjustable time/etc... so I currently have a nice game going with the GF and this game can host many more...

    Apple G6 - link to apple.com

I can give a Lombard or Pismo G3 Powerbook a G4 chip, because the processor is on a daughter card that can easily be swapped out. I cannot swap out an iBook processor for a G4 chip without also swapping out the entire motherboard, because the iBook has the CPU on the board, making it nearly...

    Apple G6 - link to apple.com

Why ever jump to 64-bit only? The PPC spec was designed to be a 64-bit chipset with a 32-bit instruction subset. A chip following the spec could implement the 32-bit subset, or the entire 32/64-bit spec. If there was a major architecture change ahead in the manner you hint, we are talking...

Copy Protected CD works in Mac OS X Panther

For the most part, the copy protection is based on how Windows reads CDs. MacOS X reads CDs differently than Windows or MacOS 9, and usually doesn't get fooled by the copy protection used on most copy protected CDs that will fool Windows or MacOS 9.

    Panther Giving Me Bull

This feels more like a problem with the Hard Drive... if you have a diagnostic CD that came with your machine, use it, as it should be able to check the HD for bad connections/etc. Tech Tool Pro 4 should be able to do a hardware diagnosis as well.

    USB for G3 laptop

Well, you are talking about a G3 Powerbook, which since you don't already have USB, that is the Wallstreet or Kanga. Both of these will accept PCMCIA cards that provide USB like those sold at Other World Computing.
