Please don't call it a Macintosh

oh my god. you do realise that AMD's x86 chips are clones of Intel's IA32 architecture right? in software terms, it'd be like using Windows and saying you hate MacOS..

Windows on Macs: The Average-Joe magnet

Anyone buying an iBook shouldn't expect Radeon or NVidia FX graphics. and. Apple would be better off offering a "blue box" or "red box" (whatever they used to have back in OpenStep) base it on Wine, or a simmilar product. don't BOOT windows, create an environment that will run windows apps...

    Performance of Intel-Macs

The "news" from XLR8 is that the dev machines have a phoenix bios.. Intel admitted years ago that Firmware (such as OpenFirmware) is the way to go.. and as i said, I can't see steve accepting a board with a BIOS for production

ok, i obviously mis-read or read incorrect info..

    Also... powerPC is NOT dead

From what i read, Cocoa can run on any CPU that has a Cocoa library for it (is that with or without re-compile?) and we know Carbon WON'T WORK on intel. so they push everyone to cocoa. then they can pick and choose from ANY cpu, at the drop of a hat, with little more than a recompile at best...

Why couldn't Apple go With AMD?

how can AMD sue intel? Apple would have been the ones to approach Intel. If AMD want in, they have to convice apple. but i don't see it happening. i imagine steve will want to stick with ONE manufacturer to avoid further confusion (especially with that whole mhz myth thing again)

Why couldn't Apple go With AMD?

I'd guess apple will probably use an intel manufactured board, to their specs. it won't be like anything else, cus Steve-O wouldn't accept going back to a BIOS, so it would have to have OpenFirmware. no legacy (parallel, serial, ps2) but as i said (in a different thread i think) i think this...

    Performance of Intel-Macs

um. the CPU isn't what stops you using an "off the shelf" video card in a mac. it's the firmware/bios on the actual card, and a lack of drivers. and i don't see or want it to change. i LIKE paying a bit more to know that is going to just work, and that it won't have a vga port and a s-video...

Why couldn't Apple go With AMD?

AMD make CPUs, and maybe chipsets. Intel make pretty much anything you ask them to make. their CPUs are slightly less "efficient" than AMDs, they were initally going the wrong way to develop the P4 (ramping up clock speed as opposed to worrying about actual performance).. at the end of the...

Please don't call it a Macintosh

So does that mean a 680x (whatever 68k.. you know what I mean) isn't a mac because it's not PPC? I share the pain of hearing this news, but simply because i fear for those of us with "new" PPC machines not getting full potential due to limited support from mainly third party developers, but...

How Do You Open a .dmg.bz2 File (UT2004 Demo)?

um. if you rename a file called xyz.aaa to xyz, it DOES NOT remove the extension. it sets the file to hide the extension. and a DMG is NOT a compressed archive, it is a disk image.

Intel Prepping Surprise Dual-Core Desktop for Release

so just because apple aren't using a companies products doesn't make them "the enemy" apple dont use Sony for their LCD panels, but that doesnt mean Sony don't make good cameras and phones etc.

Intel Prepping Surprise Dual-Core Desktop for Release

why "hate" IBM? they've done us well. they still will for the next xx months (until the G5s are phased out). IBM's CPUs ARE GOOD. they just don't have the motivation to keep pushing, cus there isnt anywhere near the market for desktop G5s as there is for desktop Pentiums. I felt shit all...

Why couldn't Apple go With AMD?

From what everything says, there will be no change to the processor, apple is running on a standard x86 processor.

    Mac to use Intel Chips!

so dual, dual-core, hyperthreaded Xeons (are they code/instruction-set compatible with plain-jane P4s?) would "act" as 8 processors. THAT would be a test of OSX's multi-tasking...

There is only ONE Reason to buy a Macintosh

Also, some "PC" hardware is on-par with Apple for QA, etc. HP workstations aren't bad, and I use a new HP Compaq 8230 laptop at work (i am an IT tech covering ~360 desktops over 8 campuses) and i love it.. the big let-down is Windows. sure, the "average" pc is nothing compared to a mac, but the...

    OS X Leopard

oh. that's a good point. Have intel fixed their 64bit CPU-running 32-bit code problem? it used to be a big problem, cus it had to use emulation to do it.. does that mean all the Intel macs will be 64 bit, (with no 32bit software for (intel macs) or that there will be PPC, x86-32 and x86-64...
