State your opinion: MacOSX on x86

AHEM! April 1st! (ditto for that rumour re a $299 iMac running with a 68040 chip)

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

... conversely: "Make it idiot-proof, and someone will make a better idiot" :D

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

theed, thanks. I bumped mine to 256MB, but when I figured the machine would run slower than it does now (it's bad enough anyway!), plus I wouldn't be able to use my UMAX scanner, I figured I wouldn't bother. No point in the eye candy if it runs like treacle!

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

Well thanks, but you misunderstand my post -- I bought my Mac Christmas 1998! I'm saying I've had it for over three years now... Mind you, I got it to replace a Mac Classic. So I'm always well behind the times, me. I just read this forum as a long-time Mac fan and user, plus some day I'd...

    A little word about profanity

That's a ridiculous statement, the sort of thing mums come out with all the time... along with that other one about profuse swearing only coming from those who have limited imaginations and / or vocabularies. ;) Agreed though. No need for such profanity half the time, although I note it...

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

Well, whatever software developers settle on, let's hope they move AWAY from hardware copy protection, or so-called "dongles." They are painful, and the bane of most computer musicians' lives (this copy protection seems most prevalent in the music software industry). For example, when ADB got...

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

 By "unwittingly circumventing", I'm talking about people who aren't connected to the net, nothing about ports necessarily. Sure, you can search for cracks -- I've done it myself -- but how many actually work? Now, I'm from the UK. Broadband access is NOT widespread, nor is...

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

Requiring a SN# from someone is not useless. Scanning a network for others is. One is hard to circumvent, and many users are unaware of crack websites etc. The other is easily circumvented, even unwittingly, if the user is not connected. BUt enough of this, it's a pointless discussion :D

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

I know Office does it. It's still pointless for the reasons I outline. Such protective measures are meanigless if they're not comprehensive (i.e. you can check the current serial number against every other one). I guess MS use it, because this is far more relevant on say, a company intranet...

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

Let me get this straight: Serpicolugnut is proposing that software scans the internet (on whatever port the software uses) for duplicate serial numbers?!? How unworkable / pointless is this?!? 1) Very few "internet-enabled" users are "always on" 2) This scan would take forever!

How to share an internet connection using a USB Alcatel Speed Touch USB ADSL modem

Someone I know has his OS X iBook connected to a USB ADSL modem in the UK, but then also from time to time wants to connect his work laptop (an IBM ThinkPad running Windoze 2000). Now, as stated above, he doesn't have a straight ethernet ADSL router which would allow all this (they usually...

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

Just went to http://www.dabs.com/mac here in the UK They're selling MS Word 2001 on its own for £276!! Or MS Word 2001 with Entourage for £140. Go figure... As for Office v.X, you only seem to be able to buy the whole suite, not individual applications. What a bargain.

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

Well, I don't think piracy is the only way out, nor -- as I have already stated -- do I condone it. What I would say is that some software houses' actions (or lack of) have led me to move away from their products. Now, I don't use on-line forums to whine about this per se, but to warn others...

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

Thanks! :D Anyway, re this: As a view of life and the world, Isn't that just a teensy-weensy bit simplistic?!?

    What's your opinion about Macwarez?!

I don't use much on my iMac. It's running OS 8.6, it's all kind of long in the tooth... All the software I use is either: Free Paid-for shareware Came with the Mac / Printer / Scanner Demo software The last apps I bought were: - NewsHopper (HOW old?!?) This software cost me £50, and...

    New iMac Recall????

There's a post on mosr from a user -- his new iMac has a "wonky" apple logo on the back of its screen... I wonder if that's a possible reason for recall? Not that it's a particularly big deal.

Giving up on OS X - hate it

I think this is limited to users of machines that were touted as being able to run OS X... and all of the relevant machines CAN run OS X, it's ust that for example there's no hardware acceleration for OpenGL in certain ATI cards that the earlier Macs used (original iMacs, Powerbooks, etc.)...

    scanner software

Vuescan doesn't work for Umax USB scanners, as they themselves outline on their website... this has also been discussed in these boards at great length. Despite saying they're working on drivers (yeah, right -- they've been saying that for MONTHS), one has to conclude that basically, Umax are...

Anyone who's in the UK, using AOL and OS X, please help

Aw, dump it! AOL sucks, and what's more, in a much-publicised news story a month or two back, AOL announced they would no longer be supporting AOL for OS X in the UK. Whilst AOL worked for OS X, AOL UK said that the introduction of OS X 10.1 "broke" the software, and they would have to...
