Newest known Tiger build: Mac OS X 10.4.3 8F8

From what I understand it is available to seed partners (appleseed?) but not normal ADC members. So 8A378 is not a general audience beta release. All I can say with certainty is that it is not available to me as an ADC member. <shrug/>

    Sharing dial-up connection

You do not have to turn off the nat if you do not use the WAN port and DHCP is off. I did a little reading and from what I can tell you have to turn in internet sharing for a modem after you have connected to your ISP. Not sure if this is still true but something to keep in mind none the less...

    gmail drive

Browni beat me to it. I was going to use the GMailFS example from Linux though. (Where you mount gmail as a logical mount.) I do not know of anything to do this on the Mac. http://richard.jones.name/google-hacks/gmail-filesystem/gmail-filesystem.html

Microsoft Leading the Pack in an area where apple should be excelling

Correct, that was what I said... I think. Well not quite since it is not Power5 based either. That was a misconception based upon the patent application that was not cleared up till the ISSCC last week. Further reading for those interested: The "simple" version...

Microsoft Leading the Pack in an area where apple should be excelling

Sorry to go a little off toopic but the Cell is not a G5 derived product. The PPC core used in the Cell is a 64bit processor with VMX but it was based on a different project from the G5 with different design considerations.

Microsoft Leading the Pack in an area where apple should be excelling

Opus66 I agree, as much as MS is vilified they have upon occasion been innovators. Personally I don't even dislke Windows, though I have rarely used it for the last 3 years in favor of Linux and recently OS X. It is quite possible that Apple has been caught napping again but something does...

Microsoft Leading the Pack in an area where apple should be excelling

I have a suspicion that Apple has something planned that has not yet been announced. Mr. Jobs announced this as the year of HD yet at present very few Apple systems can play HD. We have editing software but it is a little weak. I do not know what, but I suspect something hardware related...

    Sharing dial-up connection

First the internet sharing on the iBook should be off. Next turn the firewall off on both machines. You will want to turn it back on later but this is to eliminate it as a potential problem. 1) On the G5 open Sharing. Internet sharing should be on and sharing from the Modem to computers...

    PowerBook Backlit Keyboard pictures

The backlit keyboard is the one feature I really wish the 12" powerbook had. That and the 128MB GPU are the 2 reasons I am thinking of going for the 15" PB when the next generation comes out.

    Slackware 10.1 is here

I liked it when I went there regularly (2-3 years ago). It is still the best Linux site I know of but does not quite have the tight group of vets it used to (tinkster, trickykid, aussie...). I do not even recognize a lot of the active posters now, they seem.... younger. I guess everything...

iPod a fad...so says Kevin Rollins

Sounds about right to me. I suspect that by the 20 year mark the iPod will have evolved more than the walkman has though.

iPod a fad...so says Kevin Rollins

iPods are a fad. They are a phenomenon whose popularity is at least partially social in nature. It does not mean they are not a great product but the dominance of iPods in the portable player market would be difficult to sustain without social influence being a factor. The Shuffle brings...

Just being curious are either of you active at linuxquestions.org? (I used to be but only hang around the time of version releases now.)

    Donation Drive

While I found the outage annoying I also recognize the need for such. It is nice to think that banner ads or donations through the year would pay for the upkeep but this is quite often not the case. Again I am too new to pass judgement on the site but, for the most part, I like what I have...

    !! Apple website defaced !!

That is funny and frightening at the same time apple.com.pt seems to be fixed but mac.com.pt is not. (EDIT fixed second URL)

About those free (insert item) Ads.

It is a pyramid scheme basically. People do get the merchandise but it is not a simple <click on this link to get X> . Here is a discussion of sorts from about a month ago on the topic. I looked into it briefly but I am not social enough that I know 10 people I am willing to annoy. At least...

What's legal when listening to your own music?

I think the Skylarov case (thanks for correcting the spelling) does have some pertinence to space shifting in that one of the arguments in defense was that a protected document could not be used by a screen reader for the blind. Thus the protection had to be removed in order to allow the...

    Anyone notice that Firefox sucks?

I tested it and it seems to speed things up for me but it could be a placebo effect. I don't use FireFox enough to be sure. (Mostly I use it for banking.) I would like to know how to get the middle button to work as well. I use it to open new links in tabs on Windows and Linux and find it...

    !! Apple website defaced !!

Again I pointed out a link to the Portugal site directly from Apple's main site. Further do a little research on Apple IMC Portugal and you will find that it is an authorized dealer and that apple.com.pt is real. Interlog (the company running the IMC in Portugal) does not seem too popular though.
