    Fedora

Hehe, no. I don't do much media, but there is nothing on Linux that comes close to the iLife suite. Nothing on Linux comes close to the iLife suite. Professional applications like Photoshop and MS Office are unavailable on Linux. Gimp and OpenOffice do work to some extent, but there are...

Piggy back Wi-Fi user faces 5 years in prison

You telling me that if I see somebody's home with the door open, and I walk in and help myself to the contents of that home, I'm not committing a criminal offense?

    Find Madeleine

I do not mean to be crass, but I think the whole 3-ring circus surrounding Madeleine's disappearance needs to stop. Seriously, when you start seeing people walking with "Find Madeleine" T-shirts or posting "Find Madeleine" posters in their Windows in England, hundreds/thousands of miles away...

    Recording SWF movies

Hello there. I'm looking for software that will allow me to create a movie of my workflow. I'm basically making a presentation on how to use some software I've written and would like to make a flash presentation about it. There is IShowU, but that makes standard video files which are far too...

iPhone to support Web 2.0 Apps

I'm not familiar with AJAX, but would it be possible if Apple decided to allow the iPhone "bundle" some AJAX sites, i.e. download the whole thing in the background so that the site works like an application residing on the iPhone itself?

Broken external HD - data recoverable?

Hundreds of dollars is a small price to pay for the chance of saving those videos. Especially so if they're important videos, like that of a wedding, or of a relative who is no longer around.

    Fedora

Most modern Linux distributions do a fairly good task of hiding the user from the command line. Of all the distributions, I think Fedora does that best as it has a GUI tool for everything. Linux is taking off in a big way in many developing countries, and it's no big surprise really.

    WWDC 2007. thoughts? guesses?

A modern version of Xcode with a code folding, refactoring, syntax checking as you type (think of red squigly lines in Word when you spell things wrong), function hints with summary as you type. This is 2007, it's about time Xcode started to act like it was the 21st century and not behave like...

    Fedora

I'm a Debian fan. I've Tested Fedora up until version 4. My biggest gripe was with the "yum" package manager, the way it seemed to hang the computer whenever it queried packages, and the insane amount of network access it required just to operate. Apparently things have changed a lot in Core 7...

@ fryke: I thought I was cynical, but you sure walk away with the prize :D.

MS .docx format: need to vent my anger

And because it's XML which is basically plain text, it's nearly impossible to corrupt. I've worked with far too many Word documents that were corrupt and that resulted in the whole file being lost. No such problem here with XML, which I think is a huge huge benefit.

MS .docx format: need to vent my anger

.docx is awesome. Its about time they abandoned the old .doc format and switched to a XML based format.

Mac Plus beats AMD Dual Core PC

I take great exception to this statement. Do you honestly think that when software developers get together, they discuss about how to make things bloated and inefficient? "Oh look, product A is doing way too well. Let's throw in a few wait/sleep statements in there and some superfluous loops."...

    mad at Apple

It's an Apple store. The staff are trained to support Apples. The live, breathe, eat all things Apples. Now, how are they supposed to know what version of Ubuntu runs on what? Who knows what version of kernel, Gnome, HAL, drivers run on which version of Ubuntu? You gotta ask yourself, how...

Odd crash in UB only using my own QSort

Have you tried running it through the debugger to see which line is chokes on? You could try stepping through the entire thing (which could take a long time) or you could set multiple breakpoints in parts of the code where you think something could go wrong.

Mac Plus beats AMD Dual Core PC

One thing the author didn't address, is whether the Windows machine was using a virus scan, and what other applications/services were running in the background. This is highly significant, as the performance of the Find/Replace test does not make sense. Anyway, I was happy with doing simple...

Mac Plus beats AMD Dual Core PC

Yes. They are. I can't speak about 20 years ago, as I wasn't using computers then. - 15 years ago, I remember struggling with Word Star. We couldn't do images, had only 1 choice of font though with italic, underlined and bold variations. Internet? What's that? Multi-tasking? Whatever for...

Mac Plus beats AMD Dual Core PC

This is a ridiculous comparison. But I guess whatever makes headlines these days is fair game. Just a couple of things to note: 1) What was the size of the Word file? Contain anything other than text? It is most likely smaller than 4 MB as a larger file will cause the system page in/out to...

Anyone Tried ASP.NET 2.0 on Bootcamp

After hearing all the horror stories about Parallel's customer support, I'm giving that company a wide berth until they sort themselves out.
