    Downgrading OS?

I don't think that's how it works, MisterMe. I think that any version of 10.4.x can be installed on a Mac that supports Tiger. Since all white iBooks came with FireWire and supported at least 256MB of memory, they're all compatible with 10.4. A retail disc will work; a grey one won't...

    Disk Utility problem

Again, Shift starts you in Safe Boot Mode, not Single User Mode. Are you not seeing Safe Boot in the login window header? The only way to start in Single User Mode is to hold Command+S at startup.

    Disk Utility problem

If you bought your computer new, it definitely came with an install disc. You can force your Mac to run first aid on startup by holding Shift until the gray apple and spinner appear. Then be patient. When you eventually get to the login screen (if your Mac doesn't automatically log in) you...

    Cloning a Hard Disk

Uh, yeah, djackmac. Methinks that process is more involved for a new Mac user than jcan would like. Carbon Copy Cloner is a great solution.

    os 10.3.9 help

To be clear, 867MHz is the minimum supported processor speed for 10.5 (Leopard); your G4 would have to be at least that fast.

    os 10.3.9 help

So, it's an iMac with FireWire. Therefore, it's capable of 10.4 (Tiger), which is easier to find; I found several copies of the 10.4 retail install disc on eBay and none of 10.3. A memory upgrade might be a good idea, too; your iMac supports up to 1GB.

    os 10.3.9 help

You can seek Panther (black retail disk) on eBay. What model G3? For the G4, are you saying you're holding C to start from the CD and getting nowhere. You might try zapping the PRAM.

    List View with iDisk

The option to always open in list view is only visible when the window is already in list view. So, you're saying even after you view your iDisk as a list and set it to always open in list view in View Options, it still fails to do so?

Did you log out/in? Sorry, forgot to mention you have to relaunch the Finder to recreate the prefs file.

What about from the Go menu? I'm thinking the first thing worth doing is trashing your Finder preferences file, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.

    List View with iDisk

Is the behavior any different if you open your iDisk from the Go menu (Shift+Command+I) or open a new Finder window in list view and then click your iDisk in the sidebar?

    32-bit vs. 64-bit Apps

On your MacBook, Mac OS X runs by default in 32-bit mode yet is compatible with 64-bit apps, which may run more stably than their 32-bit counterparts. To date, 64-bit apps likely are also compiled to run in 32-bit mode if necessary. There's no need to be concerned about stability. If you were...
