And I just checked it out a little at info.apple.com and it looks like when the PMU is reset it wipes PRAM and NVRAM and also any ram disk with information on it, as well as shutting down your machine. So it looks like I have the cause of the shut down - but what would cause the PMU on a 600mhz...

I'm sure that with a US iPod you get a power adapter brick that is US 120/220v, but for $40 you can get a world travel kit or something, and your friend could always just go to a european apple store and get the power adapter that she would need for less then 110 euros.
