The mother of all OS X problems

... I'd bet the hard drive is hosed. One thing you can try, but it costs a little money, is getting a Firewire hard drive enclosure and slapping the laptop drive in it. OtherWorld Computing has them for about $70-90. Make sure to get one with the Oxford 911 chipset. Anyway, once it's in the...

    17" PowerBook

Actually, if I remember correctly, Apple has said that only existing models would continue to boot into OS 9, meaning the new Powerbooks are exempt from that restriction. iMacs, eMacs, and Towers should all boot 9 fine until they are upgraded again.

    17" PowerBook

And that's why God invented Ebay. :) Seriously though, It's going to always be that way. If the demand for 15.2" superdrive powerbooks is so strong where you are, take advantage of it and sell yours. You probably won't even take a loss if the demand is high enough. Then get the 17" for...

    Airport Extreme

We should be seeing some aftermarket PCMCIA cards with 802.11g sometime in the next few months. Linksys is taking preorders for theirs, about $80. The only question is whether the OS will support an aftermarket card. It should, but then again, we are talking about Apple here.

    Erase CD-RW without admin password

We have several eMacs running OS X.2.2, which we have set up with an admin account, as well as a regular user account. The users will not have access to the admin password. Is there a way to erase a CD-RW without having to enter the admin password in Disk Utility? Is there another utility they...

    Earliest Mac

More than that, explain that the beige G3s are more than five years old, released in 1997. If someone complains, ask them to load Windows XP on a system five years old and see how fast it runs. If you want to know exactly when your system was built, check the serial number. The first two...

how easy is it to set up more than one mac to one cable modem using Airport

A cable modem router will help greatly with computer to computer transfers, but you won't see much difference at all downloading from the web. At most, you're getting 3Mbit off the web... an Airport's 11Mbit connection will more than handle that. If you were talking about connecting more than 5...

    Web publishing software options?

You can choose from Netscape Communicator, AppleWorks (if you already have it), MS Word (again, if you have it)... all provide some basic drag-and-drop web design capabilities. There are shareware and commercial packages out there, but to be honest, for simple pages, the free solutions are much...

NEW 160gig HD only show 32 gigs Help!!!!

I lost about 7GB on my 100GB drive when I formatted it. That's a far cry from the 33GB he's reporting. No answers yet, but I'll keep digging. Bryan

NEW 160gig HD only show 32 gigs Help!!!!

I just read an article about a user with a 40GB drive that wouldn't show more than 32GB available. His problem was that he had used the jumpers to configure his drive for Slave mode. Apparently with the Maxtor drives on a Mac, he didn't have to use any jumpers at all for slave mode. Once he went...
